Marathon Training/Trail Running Updates

Tuesday, August 06, 2013

Well... I'm at it again. I am just finishing week 8 of 18 weeks of marathon training. I am Columbus bound! I will be running my second full marathon this year (and to date) on October 20th. I am sooooo excited.. now that I have one "under my belt", I am feeling so much better about this one. I have taken on Trail Running as well.. and let me tell you... I LOVE IT! I was a bit leary of them after fracturing my pelvis last year on a trail run, but now... I'm full go at them and loving every minute. They have been awesome with the canopy shade from the trees when it is hot and they are a little "softer" on the body. They also build agility, endurance, and speed. I run so much stronger on the paths and roads (and even the treadmill) now that I have been conquering the trails. I, also, have built up the ability to tolerate heat so much better. I have never been one for heat and humidity, let alone running in it.

Weight management.. that's a constant work in progress. I'm currently holding at 138-139 steady and would like to get to 135. It is very difficult when you are doing runs of 14+ miles a week plus an additional 15-20 during the week. So I'm going to go with my weight and if I drop the few pounds.... GREAT! If not, I accept where I'm at until after the marathon.

Tendonitis/Fascia issues in foot.... today I had a steroid injection into the fascia of my right foot. It's torn from all my running and a heel spur. I will be able to have something called PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections. They will cause rapid soft tissue healing. However, that plan will wait until after my marathon. I will have to be injected and casted for a week.. then no impact for 3 more weeks. So I will tackle that as soon as Columbus is done. I typically scale back in November and December... so this will work perfectly. I will take on core/weight training and more biking for the 4 weeks.. then slowing reintroduce the running and come January head into marathon/ultra training!!

Forward Movement is what it's all about! emoticon

Wonderful! I have never tried a trail run but your description makes me want to. I hope your foot hangs in there, good luck with your continued training!

Have a fun race! I assume you talking about Columbus, Ohio. I hope the weather is good, could be quite a range as I'm sure you know.
