Neon Run Oct 19-Training for the 5k day 1

Ok so I have found a 5k that I am interested in doing on Oct 19th in Orlando. The NEONRUN. A friend and I from work are going to enter into this. My goal is to get through it. It is my first one and I want to do more. Lets get thru this one first. I'm very excited. I have joined the walk/run to 5k plan and team to help me track and train. Yesterday was my first day. I was sore before starting so what I did I'm pleased with however I will learn to push on as the 8 weeks progress.
The plan tells you to WALK 4mins JOG 1 Min day 1 5 times. Well I started off running .5incline at 4.5mph for 5 min and walk 1 at 3.5 mph. I did this 2x. Then my side started to hurt and I wanted to get off but I continued on. So I took it down to 3.5 and walked for 13min then ran for 2 min at 5mph. Then finished at 3mph walking for the last 4min.

Today I am going back and I will do the plan the right way. And throw in some strength as well.

I felt really good after my workout. But my back is hurting.. So I say slow and steady wins the race.

One thing that I am wanting to know is what and when should I eat preparing for this thing.
Ive looked everywhere. If anyone could give some advice that would be lovely.

I have a crazy work schedule so some days I get off at 6:15 and get to the gym by 645 pm. So I also dont want to be eating too late..

Please help...
