Goals / Rewards

Thursday, October 10, 2013

As October progresses, I'm struggling with my goals and rewards for the month. I have always had a difficult time in devising a reward strategy for myself. I feel guilty giving myself treats / spending money on myself. I know this is not healthy. I hear my mother's voice inside my head telling me that I'm "selfish."

So, I decided that I'm going to use the same behavioral modification tool that we are using with my oldest child (4 years old) on myself. Basically, it's the color system (red, yellow, and green) on a calendar page. A "treat" is identified at the beginning of the week for the weekend. The "treat" isn't necessarily food-related, either. A red day means no treat, period. Otherwise, 4 greens are needed to get the treat. (Eventually, the number will change -- but starting something new, it's good to start with half the week as green.)

When it comes to my daughter, I'm brilliant at identifying appropriate treats -- based on weekly plans, etc. However, I can't seem to do this for myself.

Does anyone else struggle with this? Or struggled with this in the past? If so, how do (or did) you overcome the stumbling block?

Thanks, in advance, for your advice.

I'm with Angie. I am learning the reward system with Max and seem to stick to it. I have the reverse problem as you tho, I reward myself all the time. I am learning to reign it in!

Look forward to your progress -- you can do it Mel!

I've never been creative or disciplined enough to design any goal and rewards plan for myself, let alone follow one, so I can't really give you any advice. But I do admire your strategic diligence! emoticon
