Need a new outlook

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

I've been a member of sparkpeople since 2009. A lot has happened to me in that time. I was in great shape and running lots, then I had my youngest son, and since then I've had a real issue with sticking to changes for my health. I feel motivated in the beginning, and then it just peters out and I go back to eating crap and not exercising. Or I exercise, but eat so much that I wouldn't lose any weight and I give up out of frustration.

I need to try something new. Well, it's new to me anyway, sparkpeople has been telling me the same thing for 4 years: make small, easily attainable changes. I read this, but didn't really take it to heart. I thought, "I ran 5-10K before, that's what I'm doing again." So I jump right in, with 30-40 minute jogs. Jogs that took me away from home for 1.5-2 hours. Running feels great, but in order for you to improve it does take a considerable time investment. I work full time, have 3 children, a husband, and a whole slew of commitments... I honestly do not have the time to commit to being a runner right now. And this has frustrated me into being inert I think. I need to change my mindset about fitness. Today I went for a very quick 20 minute jog from my front door. I won't be doing a marathon anytime soon with 20 minute jogs, but you know what? It easily fit into my day, I'm not sore and exhausted and my kids didn't even notice that they were alone with dad. I can run without being a "runner", and that's ok! I also did two 10 minute cardio videos in my kitchen between snack and lunch time, and that worked too.

So I need to stop stressing about being great at something, and just squeeze in what I can. Start small! New goals:
1. At least 10 minutes of activity every day.
2. Track my food intake.
3. Reach for water before other beverages.

I also started reading the Spark book again, and I'm actually going to follow the program and not think I'm above starting small. It's what I need. Wish me luck. :)

Do what it is achievable for you.
I also have to battle with my "all-or-nothing" attitude. Good luck to you!
