Looking at 2014

Friday, January 10, 2014

Last year was a bust weight wise. I gained 15 lbs. I knew mid way something was off with my body but I didn't proactively do anything about it until November. That's when I was finally given the diagnosis I'd been wanting. Hypothyroidism. I was hypER in my teens and its' been "off" my whole life so I knew it was a good chance that that's what was causing all of my symptoms. I had to change drs after 35 years to get that diagnosis and treatment, but I'm so glad I fought for my health for once.

He started me on a base dose because 1. I have heart palpitations already and higher doses can cause more; 2. He doesn't want to push me into hypER again and 3. He really wants to give it time to settle in my body before we do more bloodwork. Doing bloodwork too soon after starting can be misleading. So I'm almost at the point where I'll be able to go in to see how it's working. He told me he wants me at a .5 and my last test was 4.26.

I started feeling better the first week I was on it. I don't need to nap every day, I don't need as much sleep at night, I have more energy during the day, my sugar cravings have drastically gone down, my excess hair is thinning, my hair has stopped falling out in clumps every day, the scale is finally moving downward and my chemical depression has lifted, allowing me energy to do what I've always wanted to do. I'm enjoying things again. I'm cross stitching again, something I've always done but had stopped for the past few years. I'm going to see a physiotherapist next week for my back. I can't do any kind of walking now, even 10 minutes inflames it so much I need an anti-inflammatory to sleep. I'm looking forward to getting some doable exercises to help with this chronic pain.

We have a few trips planned this year and a big wedding. My brother and sil (she's always been my sister in my heart) are finally getting married in August after 11 years together. They call those years a trial run in jest. My goal is to be under 200 for that day which is August 16th. We're going to West Edmonton Mall for 3 days in August, Victoria for 4 days in July and the Barkerville area for a night as well.

All in all, I'm looking forward to this year.

Thanks everyone. I'm on a much better dose now for my thyroid, but it takes about 8 weeks before it's taken full effect in your body so it's a slow process until then. I'm still making some bad choices during the day, but I'm also making more good than bad now. I'm incorporating more fresh into my day so that even if I have a candy bar, I did get 6 servings of veggies in too.
