Thank you, Sparkpeople! An update from me...

So it seems my page is being featured as the Motivator of the Day! What an honor!

It's been a while since I updated, so just want to let anyone wondering know...I am STILL more or less in maintenance mode after 4 years and some major life changes!

My original goal weight was 124 pounds, to make it an even 50 pounds of total weight loss.

I reached it a little less than 4 years ago. Everyone I meet that finds out I used to be heavier always asks what my secret is. They always seem slightly disappointed when I tell them because it actually involved effort and not some magic solution.

I initially lost the weight by tracking all my food and doing Jillian Michael's workout DVD, The 30 Day Shred (I did NOT do it for 30 days - I did it 3-4 times a week for months). I slowly incorporated other workout DVDs (I love the 10 Minute Solutions ones) to mix things up a little, as well as completed Couch to 5K.

Unfortunately, in January 2012 I injured my lower back badly and got two slipped discs as a result. Since that time, pretty much any excessive cardio screws up my back. I also went back to work (first 3, then 4 days a week) to a mostly sedentary job in September 2012. These 2 things have been a HUGE challenge in keeping the weight off. I am no longer 124 pounds, but I hover between 126 and 132 depending on the day, week, month. I am okay with this and still consider this maintenance mode because of the above mentioned challenges. I still track my food a good portion of the time and own a Fitbit, which has been an essential tool for me. Despite being at a sedentary job, I make an effort to get at least 10,000 steps in a day or 5 miles. Due to time and physical limitations, I am not able to exercise the way I could a few years back, but I am as active as a can be and I still fit in my smaller clothing, so I must be doing something right! I owe a HUGE part of that to tracking. It is something I recognize that I will always have to do.

Certain things remain a challenge for me. Strength training is still my nemesis. Every single week I promise myself I will start to strength train again because it's not as bad for my back as cardio but I always break my promise to myself. I would like to raise my fitness level to at least half of what it was 2 years ago, and I am having a hard time doing that. I would love my body to be more toned and I know strength training is the only way to do it!

Alcohol is another challenge for me. My consumption is much more moderate than it once was, but when I DO treat myself, it inhibits my ability to make healthy choices and is, in itself, a bad choice. I know this is one area I need to learn moderation in and it is taking me too long!

Overall, however, I think I have done well for myself in the fitness and health aspect over the past 4 years and I am flattered to be a Sparkpeople motivator. I look forward to being motivated by you all, as well, as I can always use a "re-boot!"

These things take time and studies have shown that the longer it takes you to reach your goals, the more likely you are to maintain! To long time users/friends - hope you are finding continued success here!
