End of Week One--Elimination Diet

I still have a visceral reaction to seeing the word "diet" up there. I have never believed in being on a diet--rather in eating all things in moderation. However, I've realized that if I could moderate my eating, I wouldn't be in the state I'm in. So I've decided to follow my doctor's recommendation to eliminate several foods (wheat, corn, sugar, dairy, eggs) from my daily eating in an effort to improve my health and regain some control over my eating.
I started last Monday, and I wanted to give up by Day 3. After three days of "depriving myself" (as I saw it), I had a constant dull headache, was hungry all the time, and the scale hadn't budged one little bit. But it was doctor's orders, you know, so I stuck it out. In the past, I had tried the idea of cutting out sugar, flour, etc, but I had always given up within three or four days, when I didn't see any payoff. This time I decided I was in it for the 3 weeks she prescribed.
I woke up a new person on Day 4.
The scale suddenly started to drop. Like, plummet. I lost 8 pounds, all told, this week. In the back of my head that little nagging voice says, "It's just water weight," but so what if it is? that is water that I have been lugging around for months, so I am just as happy to say goodbye to it as to fat. I clearly don't need it for anything, as I've been drinking a gallon of water a day and I have to assume that with a steady supply, my body has all it needs!
I also feel much, much better. I am not nearly as snippy with my family, and I haven't had an anxious meltdown all week. Not even last night, which would have been typical before going back to school on a Monday morning. I actually *feel like* working out--I got up at 5 to do yoga this morning for the first time in forever--and I have a ton of energy. So there's that!
I do still have regular, dull headaches. I don't know what that's about.
One thing I think I have to adjust is the tea intake. She didn't eliminate caffeine, and, in my typical tendency-to-overdo-it style, I have been drinking black tea by the quart, iced and unsweetened. I woke up with a hot flash last night, which is very unusual for me, so I am going to switch over to herbal tea this week and see if that makes a difference.
I had my first big test last night when we had neighbors over for a cookout. I love my super-supportive girl, Kerry, who brought a watermelon and a black bean salad, because she is amazing like that. I saw her at the parade on Saturday and told her about the diet and she said, "I don't know what I'll bring, but I'll make sure it's something you can eat!" This is why I love her. I don't know what I'd do if the people in my life were saboteurs who brought things like fried chicken and brownies :)
We had a lovely cookout, and the only thing that was off-limits for me was the roll for the burger. I just put mine between two gorgeous leaves of Boston Bibb and had at it. I made a tossed salad, and a brown rice salad with kalamatas, tomatoes, capers, and lemon, and Kerry brought the black beans. I did not even miss having a beer! I think the best thing about this diet is that I have no desire to eat anything other than what's on the plan. I don't know if it's getting off the sugar, or what, but I haven't had a single craving all week.
I keep waiting for there to be a downside to this, but so far it's a big honeymoon. Hope that feeling lasts!
