Time to Take an Inventory!

Saturday, May 31, 2014

It is the last day of the month and a great time to take an Inventory of Me: time to review my dieting errors and successes in May and time to think of ways to have more successes in June.

Dieting Errors: I blamed changes in my schedule for my being lazy and not wanting to make time to exercise (the kids' spring break, traveling to see family, out-of town family visits to my home, the kids' baseball season, crazy busy days at work, etc). In April and in part of May I was a slacker when it came to tracking. I found myself saying some of the same old "fat voice" phrases: "having seconds this time won't matter because I've been so good for the last several months"; "I just want to sleep in"; "I shouldn't eat this extra pork chop but it tastes so great."

Diet Successes: I didn't let more than 3 days go by without exercising. By the end of the month I found more ways to get in "spontaneous" exercise (See the Beck Diet Solution for why this is important). I started taking a break at work each day to jog down and up the five flights to my office - a great way to clear my head and burn some calories. (Boy those stairs are a killer!) I bought a bike helmet and took my bike out for the first time in months - went for a great 3 mile ride with the kids. I picked up a Wii Fit disk at a garage sale for $1 (it works GREAT) and purchased a used Wii Fit board on the Game Stop, scoring extra points for saving money and making exercise more fun (thereby increasing the likelihood of exercising even more!). By the end of the month I brought my meal portions back to normal and when eating out I divided my plate into two. I boxed up the one half and maybe finished the other half - or didn't - because I paused and took a moment to think: "Am I still hungry for this?" And often, by the end of the month, the answer has been, "No."
The number one success? I have found that encouraging other Sparkpeople members, from the bottom of my heart, motivates me to get and stay on track. So thank you, Sparkpeople.com, for giving me the practical tools (tracking, reports, etc.) as well as the emotional motivation to be and stay healthy. Feeling so grateful. AND SO READY TO TACKLE JUNE!
