Busy Summer Break

Monday, June 09, 2014

Well, folks, its been a good few weeks since I've provided an update.

School ended for me in mid-May. My finals were a lot tougher than I had imagined them to be. I did only okay on my anatomy/physiology exam, averaging all the components out to a low B or high C. But, my instructor posted all our points for every exam, assignment, quiz, participation onto our class website and mine totaled 87%. I was pretty disappointed, even though, yes that's a B. But, in order to get into the program I want, I have to have a 3.6 GPA across these core classes and a B in anything won't cut it. So, I cried for a while, contemplating my future as a nutritionist with no clout instead of a bona fide RD. I resolved to try harder in my next classes. Our final grades were released and posted on our transcripts. And to my relief, surprise, and anything else! He rounded up my grade to an A!!! I cried again, but this time I was so happy and very grateful for the break.

I have now been about two weeks into my summer break, which has really been anything but. I've been catching up on projects and chores long neglected during the semester. One thing I did, which was extremely wonderful and cathartic was to finally clean my room. It was the last bit of baggage hanging on from when I was super deeply depressed not all that long ago. I had stopped having energy and the motivation to maintain my normally clean and organized room. So, I rested a few days and then got down to business. I did a total clean out. Did ALL laundry I could find. Organized shelves, dusted things, vacuumed all the floor I had to vac... It took me almost 3 days from start to finish, but most of that was laundry. Why does bedding have to be so tedious to clean?! But, by the end of it, I felt amazing! It felt like I had finally gotten past the last bits of depression holding on.

Right after that I got recruited from my friend at church to help make bobbysoxer poodle skirts for a 1950's themed awards banquet. Luckily, I talked her into making the skirts out of felt and thick elastic. That helped eliminate about half the sewing work required (no hems, no finished seams, no buttons or zippers...) That definitely helped since I made 10 skirts! Immediately after that project was finished, I started on an adorable skirt for my niece's 2nd birthday party. It was inspired by an overpriced Etsy creation. The party was a Disney theme, so she was too look a bit like Minnie Mouse. The skirt turned out super cute!

Before I could get to the party, though, I had yet another project on my agenda. My grandmother gifted my mom with a new bed, so we needed to do a mega clean out of her room. It took 4 days and we never really officially finished. We got the majority of it done, enough for the bed to go in, and that was done Friday. Unfortunately, cleaning my room and then cleaning my mom's room has left me with some mega asthma problems. I've been out of my inhalers for a while, so it has been quite a difficult few days. My lungs feel like they're in a vice and I have this constant feeling of needing to cough. Luckily, the last day of the clean-out my mom found an inhaler that was still good and half full. I haven't taken it long enough to have an effect yet, though. That, and the one day this week our air conditioner broke when it was 108 degrees outside, coupled with a few days of headaches or migraines has made this summer break a bit of a bummer.

So, since my health seems to be struggling right now, I'm in serious need of an overhaul. Yes, I could challenge myself to exercise, but geez! It may not be traditional, break-a-major-sweat cardio, but all this cleaning has kept me pretty darn active! I think I may need to focus on diet first. I start school on June 16th and I think I'll be doing a summer school nutrition challenge for myself. I'm going to mull it over for a bit and see what I come up with.

And before I hit summer school, I have two more projects I want to tackle: painting my bathroom and installing a new sink vanity, and finish sewing a duvet cover for a friend of mine that I should have done almost two years ago (yeah , I know... Depression made me the flakiest a-hole in the WORLD on that one! I am ashamed.)

On that note, here are some pics from the past couple weeks:

Finished cakes (see previous blog). That German chocolate cake was a BEAST! It weighed at least 10lbs!

The finished poodle skirts in action

Minnie Mouse skirt!

New glasses! I can finally see!

Louis all up in yo face!

Kyle all up in MY face!

Goofy mustaches and a killer photobomb by my bro!

Some food I made: Lentil stew thing with a fried egg and parmesan croutons.

Pappardelle pasta with asparagus, tomatoes, and ricotta cheese.

Greek couscous with grilled chicken on a bed of greens and watermelon & mango with Tajin.

A day in Julian and Lake Cuyamaca!

All this brought to you by a tiny keyboard and a 7" tablet... Since my laptop has totally died.

Cleaning your room sounded like a cathartic experience. I know I feel pretty accomplished whenever I do some spring cleaning. Most days, I'm perfectly happy to ignore the pile o'stuff. LOL !

And an 87% in anatomy IS really fantastic. Just consider how many students probably failed that class before you beat yourself up because you didn't get an A. Remember, these types of programs aren't just looking for a straight A student. They are looking for a person with a diverse skill set. You won't just be a dietitian, you'll be a chef too ! Knowing how to create meals that your future clients will eat and enjoy is a skill that few people have.

Give yourself more credit for all the different skills you will bring to that program.

Being able to cook meals like that really is a talent.

Glad you're blogging. I'll be blogging soon too. just waiting for some news that should be coming any day now.
