Day after the great flood of 2014

Tuesday, August 12, 2014

Wow what a storm we had yesterday. In six hours we got 4.5 inches of rain. Some areas got over five inches. To add insult to injury, we are expecting more rain today.

The storm itself wasn't bad as far as lightning or threats of tornados, it was just the torrential downpours. I was driving home from the doctors office in it. It was scary driving in it and what would've taken 45 minutes, took almost 1.5 hours. Although I guess it's not as bad since I heard on the 11 o'clock news that it was taking people like five hours to get home from work.

Most of the area freeways have parts that are closed due to flooding. One freeway interchange had almost 15 feet of water last night!! The news also showed one of the overpasses that was flooded that I drove through was closed because it was so bad. I'm glad I made it through!

We were fortunate not to have any flooding in the basement. Our streets were flooded and at my parents house down the street unfortunately had flooding in their basement up to the second step. They had a lot of stuff already in large plastic tubs so everything's not a total loss. I've seen many people on the news with total losses.

I hope that the weather holds today and we don't see any more rain. We certainly don't need it.

Thanks for reading and have a great day.

No kidding. I only heard about it and didn't see it (other than the fact that it kept raining) my complex is on the high ground apparently. So thankful that today's sunny! I'm sure the people I know who got stuck on the expressway think so too!

Oh yikes! There's not much you can do when it rains like that, other than wait. It's got to be terribly hard to watch water filling up a basement and be powerless to stop it.
I'm glad that you made it safely home and that you didn't get any water in your house.
I hope that the rains stop soon. Stay safe!

Yeah one of the only bright spots of today was the absence of thunder (as far as I know anyway). At least it wasn't even more dangerous to be out in it. Rain itself is dangerous enough to be driving in and nearly every time it rains where I am, there is also thunder and lightning, definitely unsafe to be outside at all.

Wow, being in Florida I know plenty about flooding, hurricanes, tornados and water spouts and none of the previously mentioned are any fun. Where are you that the flooding is so bad? We've been having a lot of rain as well, but you can't live here because you have a basement. I have never seen a house in Florida with a basement. Not that they don't exist, it's just not a very smart idea because it's too wet here they would fill up with water for virtually no reason at all.

Glad you made it home from the doctors office safely. Slow and steady wins the race. Just watch out for the sinkholes. It's always an interesting event to have one open up in the middle of the road.

Take care and be safe. Hope it stops raining soon!
