A Little Help from My Friends

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

I don't let my homelife spill into my worklife very often. Yesterday was an exception. I mentioned to a co-worker that I'll be out of the office for a few days due to my Guy's back surgery. She said, "When you go to pick him up from the hospital, put some different-sized pillows in your car. He can use what he needs to make himself comfortable on the ride home."

Brilliant! I never would have thought of that!

His surgery is Wednesday around noon. It's a minimally-invasive disc-reduction procedure with an overnight stay at the hospital. The hospital complex is about an hour away from our home. I'll stay there all day Wednesday, come home to walk Lola and sleep. Then I'll return Thursday to bring him home.

Any additional suggestions? The whole ordeal of surgery, hospital stay, transportation and home recovery is new to me.

If you have time before you go, stock up on things you think you may need or want to eat so you won't feel a need to go for an errand right away. Take loads of time to get everything done. Number one take away from a hospital stay is Patience! Let little remarks fall like water off a ducks back, when they are ignored they disappear, if you pay attention they can stick. Sleep is a great healer! Reward yourself with me time, like watch your favorite TV show or rent a movie. Get some rest yourself! Don't take on any extra load of any kind that you don't need to, focus on the priority of helping your loved one's healing. I hope things go very well for you. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I hope it has all gone well! By now you already know that you have had to pick up prescriptions and you probably already had ice packs ready in the freezer... or wish you had... those bags of peas are great. Thinking you and your guy... Justyna

Also, watch him very closely for any signs of infection...temperature, fatigue, confusion.

You are so welcome for the little advise I gave! It would have been a GREAT help for me, but D* was in the hospital for 4 months & 1 month of rehab..... Not the same at all! I'm 'feeling' all is well with Mike!

D* is SO much better, almost better than in the past 6 years! We celebrate our 39th anniversary, (except for the 17 year respite!) Nov. 1st All St.s day & he is! We are SO lucky! emoticon

Keep balanced & I will too & off we go into November happy, healthy & thriving!

I wish I had some good ideas for you. Maybe have something to keep his mind occupied during the ride home? A book on tape/CD, apps, games, something like that?

I'll be thinking of you and Mike.

Hey Girl! I have a helpful hint for you: When I picked up my friend after knee surgery, someone told me to put a green garbage bag on the front passenger seat. When she sat down, all she had to was swivel! It worked like a charm for her! I'm sure it would be good for a back ailment as well.

Know that I'll be keeping you in my heart, thoughts and prayers. Tomorrow by this time - you'll be relieved that it's over!

    Take care. emoticon

First of all thx for the new blog!!!!!

I know it's a little strange, but I asked the Angels about his surgery, they tell me in a very loving way, he will be fine! And home as planned!

My suggestion to YOU is to REMEMBER you in all of the activities! Take support materials to read, like THE SPARK, or? Veggie packs, protein bars, etc. This is NOT a time to stop eating the things you KNOW help you stay healthy! (In a pinch: Panda Express has whole grain brown rice & sautéed veggies, ask for low oil & fresh! & teriyaki chicken, without sauce, if you eat that. There are MANY in the world! You may already know about this!) Anything that calms you & keeps you centered! Also, try to go outside, as much as possible. The hospital environment can be a little overwhelming, at times, being out doors will help YOU stay balanced. Through my 5 month experience with my DH, there are many people in stress, inside. This is an opportunity for YOU to spread love & compassion to all you meet! The doctors & nurses, especially! They are ALL over worked!

I will keep my prayers on you, both & Lola, too! (IF there is some reason he needs to stay longer & you can be off work, some PET SMARTS have over night boarding for Lola. About $12.00 a night, in our area. You will need to have her vaccine papers , especially Boratella (sp), with you. Just a thought! That way you wouldn't be torn about leaving him or stressed about her) Try to stay CALM as much as possible & deep breathe, all is well!

As you know I love you & am 'here' for you, just ask!!!!! emoticon

I think you have already done the thing that my husband and I learned to do the hard way over the years..............Ask For Help! We made the mistake too many times of thinking we could do everything ourselves. So, you are very wise. I know things will go well. Prayers and good thoughts are continued from me, dear friend!
