I don't feel good.....

Saturday, November 15, 2014

It is 4am here and 32 degrees. burr for the south! My anti histamine stopped working so I got up and took some more meds. Perhaps I am over loading them:

First thing Friday morning 9 am:
zyrtek 10mg ( supposed to last all day!) antihistamine for allergies
Allegra- D for allergies and congestion: 12 hour Decongestant withpsedoephedrine 120mg and fexofenadine hcl 60mg,antihistamine
This Does not last 12 hours more like 6-7.
mucinex-DM- 12 hour for cough and expectorant Guaifensin 1200mg and dextromethorphan 60mg

Pharmacist said that I could take just plain old sudafed to cover the hours that the allegra stopped working. So this morning 4am instead of suffering with symptoms( running nose and stuffed then stopped up so I cant breath) I decided to take:
alka seltzer plus- It last 4 hours and has aspirin for sore throat, Clorpheniramine maleate 2 mg anti histamine dextromethorphan 10 mg for cough and phenylephine bitartrate 7.8mg for nasal decongestant.

I am drinking hot water sweetened with stevia for my sore throat it feels good.
4:45 nose is still stopped up. I can't seem to sleep with my mouth open.
cough drops have not helped.

This is the third day of my allergies or sinus or cold what ever it is. I have had once a day coughing spells so severe that I thought I was going to throw up, having laryngo spasms uncontrollable barking like cough. That alarms people. I am trying to not have this turn into a full blown sinus infection like I have had so many times before. I really don't want to go to the walk in clinic. This time, that is why I have thrown the " big guns" of medications over the counter, drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
Trying to nip it in the bud so to speak.

5am and I can sort of breath thru one nostril. Maybe I will try to go back to bed. My alarm is set for 8:30 I have a client at 10, then lunch with jeff then hair color appointment at 1pm which usually takes 3 hours and then I have 2 more clients to see after that. So it is a busy day.
I need to be on my feet and not coughing or sneezing or runny nose, I think this is all sinus stuff no fever so I don't think that I am contagious.
I don't want to seem contagious either.

thursday night I got about 6 hours of sleep woke up friday morning and did paper work for 2 hours I felt fair so thought I would take advantage of the extra time in the morning to do paper charting that I was so far behind in. Instead of going to bed maybe I will just do more paper work, I am not tired and have gotten about 6 1/2 hours of sleep.

5:15 think I am up for the day.
thanks for bearing with me.

I feel for you. Been that way for a while now. This past weekend has been the worst since I now have pain in my face, sinuses. Been drinking a lot of tea, honey, lemon. Last night made chicken soup. I took alka-seltzer plus, but was awake all night.
I know its a sinus infection, but the bad part is I can afford medical but can't afford to see the doctor which really sucks.

Please be careful on the over the counter stuff. Hope you get well soon!!

I agree - Pseudoephedrine is the only decongestant that really works well. The best combo I know is Sudafed, Guafeneisin, and Benadryl (at bedtime) or Loratadine (during the day).

All those meds, Bizi ... well, I 'm dizzy just reading about them!!!
I know that meds are sometimes necessary (my husband is a bio chemist, and, we've had our discussions on the pros and cons), but I've always gone the natural way - only putting stuff in my body that I can pronounce. LOL!
I've found steam baths (towel over head over bowl of hot water ) with eucalyptus, or tea tree oils to be effective.

Sounds like a mild overload of meds--maybe not. But if nothing is working there is a temptation to keep loading until the combo works. At least you can take ibuprofen and acetaminophen in combination without issues. Asprin and other pain relievers, I am not sure.

I have had that breathing out of one nostril chronic congestion for awhile. I'm making an appointment with an ENT physician to check it out--probably a nasal valve issue. Even steroid nose spray doesn't help. I am living off Afrin and other non-drip nose sprays just to sleep at night.

Sudafed is pretty strong stuff despite a rather small pill. It makes my heart speed up. If I take a cold med with it before bed I'll wake up after a few hours, wide awake.

I'm not a physician, but the barking cough is probably from drainage, and that causes a mean sore throat. If it were me, I'd take an anti-histamine that also has an expectorant and decongestant in it, rather than taking a whole bunch of pills that interact (potentially). They keep reformulating the meds so the meth-heads wont' use the pseudo-ephedrine in them. But that's all that ever really helped with my congestion other than a nose spray.

Gargling with salt water helps some people. A neti-pot also helps though I've never tried it.

Theraflu has the properties of things that may help, though I would get both the regular and non-drowsy versions so you can function in the daytime. Some versions of Benadryl may also help, if you can get a non-drowsy one for the daytime and a regular version at night. I'd try both of these and use a non-drip nasal spray, drink some herbal tea that might help, and gargle with salt water. I doubt you are contagious. But if you start coughing/sneezing up colored stuff, that's a good sign of a sinus infection (usally starts out viral and then causes bacterial issues). If that happens, you'll need an antibiotic to wipe it out.
