7 weeks on PSMF
Wednesday, January 07, 2015
I've been spreading gradually in my middle age, and at my annual checkup in October learned that my BMI had crossed the threshold into "obese" and my blood pressure was sky high. Since I was reluctant to go on hypertension drugs, my doctor offered me the option of the protein sparing modified fast - so PSMF it was. This is my first diet, and rather challenging, but then I guess all diets inherently are. I started off at 178 lbs, and after 7 weeks am at 156, so am averaging ~3 lbs/week. My target is to get to ~135-140 on PSMF, and then to start the refeeding process. I find myself jonesying for fruit, more veggies, and pasta, so I'm hoping typing blog entries will help me keep motivated. I'm halfway there, and hope I can manage another 7 weeks of this.
What I have learned so far:
- I have more will power than I thought
- eating slower is more satisfying
- all foods will taste good if there are no other options
The holidays were rough - so many carbs to resist! I ended up over-indulging on protein but managed to stay away from carbs, and came out even for the holidays. So that slowed me down a bit but I think I'm back on track. Best news is that my blood pressure is a bit lower now, and my BMI tells me I'm now merely "overweight".
