The key is to get right back up!

Wednesday, May 06, 2015

As you guys probably know I love to speed walk. I usually take about 5-14 to 15 minute mile walks a week and almost always walk over 12,000 steps a day. What you may not know is that I fall a lot (like every 6-9 months or so). Fortunately, thanks to strong bones, I've never broken anything but falling is a very jarring event. It can and usually does tear your clothes and it certainly tears your skin. I keep trying to find more effective core exercises but some how I keep falling. I used to just chalk it up to the dangerous shoes I used to wear but now I wear sneakers almost all the time. I wish I could figure out what is going wrong.

Well, I fell yesterday and today my whole body aches. I skinned my left elbow, left knee and right hand. I was able to get right up and finish my walk which is fortunate since I fell crossing a pretty busy street.

Today will be a nice slow socializing walk with my friend Lynn and I think I'll take a couple of Tylenol right now. But you can bet that I'm very grateful for my strong bones and the ability to get right back up and keep on walking.

What makes you fall so much? Are you tripping? weak muscles? Be careful emoticon

    Glad you're okay!

Are you falling due to ground conditions (wet, gravel, mud, and the like?) or is it the speed walking? I tend to skid or slip on ground conditions, so slow down in the rain or mud or when my Birks lose their tread.

You are very fortunate. I like your attitude, though! Recoup a little and keep on going. You are doing great!

Falling in the street is very scary. I'm glad you're OK.
I have a history of falling too, the same problem as GraceOMalley. I get distracted and don't look where I'm going.

In November while running I swerved to avoid a dog, skidded on the only patch of gravel on the whole sidewalk and fell face first. I took it on the chin and chipped a tooth. Fortunately, my arms and legs were just fine.

I fall pretty often, too. Mainly because I am looking a other things and miss uneven spots or changes in elevation on the ground. I've been working on yoga balance poses to help me (?) improve my balance and hopefully minimize the tripping and falling. Don't know if that might help, but it is worth considering, right?

Google the terms: yoga balance poses for beginners
and you'll get lots of information and examples.

Glad you weren't hit by a vehicle and didn't break anything. Hope you are feeling less sore and more perky really soon.
    Take good care! emoticon
