I Just Did This

Back in January. My friend tells me that she is running a Spartan race and wants to know if I want to join her. I do some research and find out what a Spartan Race involves. My initial reaction was Hell No. I have never wanted to scale 7' walls, climb up cargo nets, swing on ropes or run through wooded, rough terrain. But there was this small voice in my head that kept saying, "What if you did do it? What if you trained and finish this race, how would that effect your fitness level, your pride, or your confidence?" I've been told that if something scares the Hell out of you, but excites you at the same time, you should do it. So I told my friend YES.
This past Saturday I completed my first Spartan Race. It was a 5 mile course with 23 obstacles and a ridiculous amount of mud. It was the hardest most physically challenging thing I have every done. I even thought to myself during the race that running a half marathon is easier than this. The course planners took full advantage of the storms that rolled through and designed the course so that all 5 miles were sliding into and climbing out of ravines. The obstacles were difficult and some really scared me to do. And the mud THE MUD. OH MY GOD THE MUD. It was soul sucking. It ended up taking me 4 hours to get through!!! When I finished the race I was DONE. My only emotion was that I'm glad that's over.
A couple of days have past and what I accomplished is finally sinking. I challenged myself and pushed myself to a brink that I never intended to, but I came out on top. I now know that I can expect more of myself, and I can deliver. I really don't have any excuses to not reach my fitness goals, because I proved to myself what I am capable of doing, and because of that. I'm looking forward to my next Spartan Race.
Do what you can today! Don't wait for tomorrow.
