I swore I never would, but...

Saturday, May 30, 2015

I swore I would never join any weightloss program that I had to pay for, but today I did. I have racked up more fitness points in May than any other single month. I have been exercising in the morning, taking a mile walk on my lunch break, and exercising again in the evening. I have lost NOTHING.

I know the problem is with food. I try to eat mainly fruit, veggies, and protein. Problem is with me eating so few carbs my blood sugar crashes. This leads me to over eat.

Unable to figure out how to eat in a way that works for me on my own I broke down and joined Weight Watchers online. They have a different approach to food that seems to work for me. Of course it is my first day.

It's much more complicated than SP, but since there are no meetings that fit my schedule I decided to try it online for 3 months. I hope that the fact that I have to pay for it will help motivate me to stick with it.

I love SparkPeople and have been here for 3 years and can't imagine my life without it, but guess I needed a kick in the pants to get back on track. So here's to yet another beginning.

A lot of Sparkers use another program in conjunction with Spark.

We each have to find out what combination works the best for us.

    Good luck!

Yes, I'm gluten free as well as hypoglycemic. Looks like I was exercising too much without eating enough, or eating enough of the right stuff. The food tracking is getting me because I have to do it all manually and I think I tend to over estimate. I really need a new mobile device :)

Recently I saw something about a gym that is offering people to use sonograms/ultrasound to see inside their bodies once per month while they're trying to lose weight. Even when some people lost no weight, they were able to see the changes inside their bodies this way, specifically that they were losing fat stores. It helped people keep with their exercise plans longer by being able to see the physical differences even when they can't see the scale difference.

If you're not doing body measurements, consider doing so. Also, double check your scale; putting it on carpet makes the scale ineffective and over years (or sooner if a cheaper model) they lose their accuracy. Then keep in mind that as long as you're doing something healthier, you are making changes in your body even when it's not obvious.

If I remember correctly, you're GF, which is why you end up with less carbs. What about adding in a little more fruit to get more complex and healthy carbs, or other items that are naturally GF but have carbs? Your blood sugar shouldn't crash from eating low carb, as blood sugars frequently crash from high carb diets (like kids eating too much sugar and freaking out until they crash) but it's possible you're just not eating enough calories through the day to get the energy you need. If you don't eat enough calories your body will believe it's starving and make you crave high carb foods to keep your brain functioning. Sometimes it's about eating more healthy foods so you eat less unhealthy foods.

Keep trying different options. Not everything works for everyone, and sometimes you need to combine options, like WW with SP to hit the sweet spot. When you find what works, plan to stick with a version of that program for the rest of your life to keep you on track instead of falling back into old habits. You'll figure it out eventually. Hang in there.

I had the same issues with SP that you have. I joined WW and in 8 months I have lost 44 pounds. The most important thing I could tell you about WW is to count everything and don't cheat yourself. Exercise a lot! I do interval running for 50-60 min a day and do a 3.5 mile walk everyday. I hope this works for you.
