Family matters

Monday, June 15, 2015

I hadn't seen my family since the beginning of the year, and hadn't told them about my weight loss. So the range of responses was interesting. My sister was the most gracious and sensitive: "You look great!" My mother was the funniest: "Don't lose any more weight! I want my daughter to stay pretty!" This was especially sweet since she has been nagging me about losing weight for the last 10 years or so.

And then there was my brother: "You have lost a HUGE amount of weight! How much?!? I'm your brother, you have to tell me!" This was shouted, not uttered at a normal conversational level. I had to take a couple of deep internal breaths not to feel insulted. And then the next morning, my brother tried to take pictures of me, knowing that I dislike having my picture taken, knowing that there is no need to take a picture, knowing that he has never in the decades that we've been siblings been interested in taking my picture. At one point he lied that our Mom wanted to have her picture taken with me, right after I heard her tell him she *didn't* want a picture. My brother is a textbook example of self-absorbed and tone-deaf so more internal deep breaths were required there.

So I guess I did manage to surprise my family, with overall positive and supportive reactions, even considering my brother's rudeness. I also slept half the day today so am bracing myself to get back to the frustrations and stress of work tomorrow.

So glad you filled us in on your family's responses to your weight loss! I was looking forward to hearing about that. Yes, your sister's response was the best. I've had people say to me in times past, after a weight loss, "You look so much BETTER!" Isn't that rude! (It's rude when people say that about haircuts, too, don't' you think?) So your sister said the right thing. And you're right--your mom's reaction was cute! As a mother, I sort of understand her feelings. Too skinny is not good, no matter how fashionable. But what's with your brother? Wanting to take your picture against your will? Not too swift.

All in all, though, what a great story!

I would have posed for a picture for your brother, with a very distinctive hand gesture! He sounds like a real pain, but the response you got from mom and sister is great. That should feel good! And really, bottom line is how do YOU feel about your weight loss, not how anyone else sees it. Hope you get all rested up to prepare you for the week. It's always hard for me to go back to work after being off, I'm just never ready to return, I have other things I'd rather be doing, ha ha. --Pam
