An unexpected workout

We had a torrential downpour after dinner - we sat in our living room marveling at the sound of rain pounding on our siding. Until the husband shouted for help from the basement. The kids and I rushed downstairs, and found the husband frantically bailing water from the basement floor into the sink. The kids and I took over while he searched for the source. Fortunately the water wasn't backing up from the drain. Instead, it was gushing from near the basement ceiling.
The husband went outside and theoried that the rain was being directed by the patio into our basement, due to settling of the stones and inadequate rocks/dirt packing underneath. So he went digging for dirt to pack underneath/beneath the patio stones and voila! the streaming of the water into our basement slowed to a trickle. We managed to bail out most of the water and I finished off by mopping the basement.
No significant damage since what came in was clean rainwater, and with our group bailing it never got higher than a few inches, and we managed to move the more absorbent articles before the water rose much. I'm going to put on my rose-colored glasses and consider this nature making us exercise!
