Re. the SC Church Shooting...

Thursday, June 18, 2015

I just found out about this from a Sparkfriend's blog. A man opened fire during a prayer meeting inside a church in downtown Charleston, S.C., Wednesday night. Nine people have died, including the pastor. A 5-year-old child survived by dropping to the ground and "playing dead".

The gunman had actually stayed and watched the service for an hour before shooting. The congregation tried to convince the gunman to stop shooting. Instead, he said to them, "I have to do it. You rape our women and you're taking over our country, and you have to go."

They're now saying this will be classified as a hate crime, as well as murder--it occurred in a historic black church.

I'm an atheist, but to me a church should be able to represent peace and safety and caring to its members. To think that that has been forever violated for this congregation by one man's selfish and senseless act angers me immensely.

There are already people posting things like, "Oh, the gunman must have been in so much pain for him to commit such an act!" and "We must forgive him and pray for him, he's in such a dark place!" OK, that's their opinion, I get that. I'll be the first to admit I'm not always politically correct. I will also admit that I lack much social grace, on occasion. So, perhaps folks on SparkPeople can take those things into account when I say this:

"I hope this gunman gets caught and gets what he deserves. I hope he's prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I believe that currently South Carolina is one of the death penalty states. I hope that he's convicted and sentenced accordingly...and that he's completely terrified the whole time--as terrified as that little 5-year-old child was, and will be, for a long, long time."

Most importantly, I wish healing and peace for the members of this church and their loved ones...both physically and mentally.

Thanks for listening, friends.

last night I was listening to the news and there is an idiot congressman from the next big county over from us He made a comment the day after the shootings that these people were responsible for their own deaths the reason is that there were 12 people in that room and the gunman reloaded 5 times to shoot them all. his comment was that why did these people not rush this guy and wrestle him to the ground

IDIOT These were mainly older people who most likely were there comforting those who had already been shot and then got shot themsleves.

Very sad indeed! And I agree, this person deserves the death penalty.

I read this morning that the guy was caught. He's a 21 year old kid. What he did was a despicable thing to do. If he hates black people so much, why didn't he have the balls to drive into "the hood" and start shooting drug dealers and pimps and the like? I'm betting that he figured the church members would be much softer targets. It is a shame that one of the people there for the Wednesday prayer meeting wasn't a concealed weapons permit holder. If one person there was carrying concealed it would have been a different outcome.

I'm with you. He committed an evil act and should be punished accordingly. He walked into their place of worship, which should have been a safe place. Stayed there for an hour! To me that is premeditated. I hope they find him soon!

No excuse for him. Evil is evil. A church should always be a safe place. How sad.
