Nowhere to hide

Tuesday, June 30, 2015

During his first year at college, the son borrowed a dorm-mate's fancy camera and took over a thousand pictures, and decided he wanted a nice camera himself. So this thrifty son, who has been socking away his summer earnings every year, decided to splurge and buy his own fancy camera and a pair of fancy lenses. They were delivered today, and he's been busy playing since.

What this means is that he's been taking pictures of me sitting on the sofa at my laptop. Clearing the dining table. Filling the dishwasher. Cleaning the kitchen. Dancing to my favorite jam.

The old me, even half a year ago, would have threatened to dunk his new toy into the toilet, or run over it with the car. I would have threatened it with destruction unless the kid promised not to take my picture. But this me doesn't mind anymore. I'm who I am, and one day we will be gone, and the kids should have some pictures of us.

And I love that the kid has passions - he's a super-nerd who also loves music, works out with his nerd friends a few times a week, and now is learning to love photography. I told him we would pay for his fancy lenses as his birthday present, and he was so grateful he squealed and gave me a hug. Now, a 6'1" man-child squealing and hugging - that's something special!

Oh wow, Bemused, what a happy story! Your son sounds quite charming--I love his attitude of gratitude, and I love nerds!

Good for you for no longer being camera shy. I have definitely not gotten there yet, but I think it's such an important indicator of self-acceptance (as well as not avoiding mirrors, which was the subject of the very first blog of yours that I read.) You are a thin person now, and maybe all those photos of your new fashionable self will intensify the joy you deserve to feel after all that hard work!

Well, now maybe you will post a picture of yourself so we have a face to go with your blogs! I think it is wonderful that you are not running from the camera, or drowning it. Good for you!

What a wonderful son you have. He couldn't have picked a better passion than photography.

So happy you have reached a point where you no longer try to avoid having your picture taken. You deserve to be the center of attention sometimes.
