Day 225 - Sunday Satisfaction

Monday, July 13, 2015

It was a really good weekend helping my parents move into their new apartment. My sister Janet and I bonded over our mutual desire to help my folks declutter and get rid of years of collecting without a focus and the inability to throw things away. We had about 3 bags of recyclable paper to send to the bin, and it was all good. I brought a few boxes back with me to Clearlake to put into our blue can as well. We got most of the house cleared out, including the garage, but still managed to bring about 6 boxes of stuff back to my dad's office/guest room to sort through before the end of the year.

So in the spirit of major housecleaning, here's what I'm grateful for this week:

...my parents had activities to get them away from the move (a wedding on Saturday, a hair appointment on Sunday) so that we could get things done without their involvement/interference.

...knowing that my sister and I are in sync about my folks and their health and well-being. We both see how they are declining, but know that we are united in ensuring that their care if the best that it can be.

...making friends with people who might not be what we expect. It is so easy to perceive of people based on what we know about them (their religious fervor, for example) and make judgments. It's nice to know that we can accept each other and cherish our mutual goals, even if we might differ on a point or two.

...having an understanding spouse who has his own expectations of the focus of our conversations when i get home, and then seeing how exhausted I am after the weekend, agreeing to table the discussion for a later time.

...the look of love from my dogs when I get home from a weekend away. I try not to forget how much their unconditional love means to me, because they give it so freely. It is one of the most wonderful blessings I can experience. I just need to remember it on a daily basis.

Have a wonderful week, friends, and cherish the blessings that you have in your lives. They enrich us all!

My siblings and I are beginning to prepare my parents for downsizing. They have sooooo much stuff! I think they're the reason I live in a small condo - I tend not to collect too much stuff.
Kudos to you for being such an amazing son/brother/husband/doggy daddy!

I've been on a de-clutter for several years. I don't bring things in without getting rid of something. DH is a bit of a pack rat. He works in the convention industry. Not a good combination. But we give out the most interesting stuff on Halloween.

ah, puppy love. Isn't it wonderful? I've never seen that look of pure, unabashed love anywhere else.

hope you get some down time now

Job well done! Kudos to Steve for being so understanding and to you for being such a good son.

Wishing you a low stress week, notice I didn't say NO STRESS, that would fall into the impossible dream category emoticon

Sounds like a really great weekend. It is wonderful when you have siblings who will work with you concerning aging parents. I had that from my sister even though she doesn't live here, she never questioned anything I did.

Now cats are a little from dogs, but I can tell they miss me in spite of their independent ways. People can always take lessons from animals and their unconditional love.

Great blog, Steve! My siblings and I are also in sync for whatever care our mum needs - that is a such a relief! Glad Steve did´nt insist on a discussion when you were really tired - those are the best moments when you realise that a relationship is a sensitive mixture of give and take and the other person can relate and be kind at the right time! Have a good week and relax now that your parents are settling in....

You worked hard all weekend and I know you are exhausted! But you accomplished so much and have helped your parents with this major life adjustment! It's just so great of you and your sister and creates another level in your relationship with her! And then to return home to a loving spouse and two adoring dogs...just wonderful.
I hope you have a great week!
    Many Hugs,
