Day 227 - Reminders

Tuesday, July 14, 2015

One of my friends was asking me about calendars and reminders, and it prompted some thoughts. When I first started thinking about getting back into shape after my accident, I had a reminder on my Outlook calendar on the computer that went off every day at 9am. All it said was "Push Play."

For anyone who has ever gotten involved with Beachbody and their exercise videos, this is a slogan that they use to help anyone get motivated to exercise. Just push the play button on the DVD player and follow along. I liked the simplicity of the expression, and the double entendre that reminds us that exercising can be like playing - fun and exciting - rather than like working.

If it feels like work, why would we want to do it? So here's a thought - let's stop calling it "working out" when we're exercising. Why would anyone want to do THAT? Find a new name for your fitness activity and see if that doesn't help your motivation.

I don't need that reminder on my calendar anymore to Push Play. I've been doing it long enough now that it's habit, like brushing my teeth and taking a shower. I love my morning workouts (oops, sorry - fitness jaunts), and I love what they have done for my body as well as my confidence. It doesn't feel like work; more like a party where sweating is allowed.

Whatever you do to inspire you to keep up with your physical activity, keep doing it. Use your tools to establish a routine and turn it into a habit.

Keep pushing play.

Great blog... I think not calling exercising a "workout" would do many of us a lot of good :)

Hadn't thought about the word workout. I do feel so great when I go to the gym and do my morning "walk". This morning I cranked up the incline and marched uphill. I, too, love to do my walking in the mornings. Kicks my day off to a good start.

I have a couple of upbeat CDs and when I need to top up my steps to 10,000 for the day, I crank up the volume and march or jog around the sitting room - I call it my Evening Finale!

I do say working out or workout ... but I don't think of it as something bad.

Hmmmm.......something to think about. I usually call anything I'm doing for self improvement "Me Time" - I'm going to give this some thought....😊

'workout' isn't a term I use. I'm going for a bike ride, or to walk the dog, for a run, to take a class.

the only time it's WORK is the elliptical. But if the weather is bad, or I don't have much time, or I need low impact...that's my WORKOUT. I watch a DVD to pass the time.

when is the last time you skipped? I was alone in the office a good bit last week, so I'd skip down the hall. Sometimes it's fun to just be silly.

    Interesting thought! emoticon
You know, I always thought of exercise as play. If I can't enjoy myself while working out, I stop.

Well after you told us to think of a new name you called it morning workout. You can't even follow your own encouragement.... what is up with that? (Smiling)

I call mine swimming. Never a work out. And if I walked I would say I walked this morning. I agree with you I hate the term workout. And I enjoy swimming so much that it is just what it is swimming.

I like how you think "mi amigo"

What a great idea. I love my morning play time too. I miss it when I don't get to do it for some reason and my day is just not the same!
