Do it before you HAVE to!

Monday, August 03, 2015

It's been over 2 years since I last wrote a blog here. No reason to write - I'd retired - was (and still am) totally enjoying it. Fast forward to January 2015 - I had some health issues so went to see my primary dr. who started me on a trek of a myriad of doctors. From heart, to blood sugar, to cancer -- I've been tested for about all of it. Final diagnosis - kidney disease. That was on March 12 -- took me a full month to digest that news b/f I even thought about doing what the dr. told me to do - 'cut your sodium to no more than 2000mg preferably lower.' At first it was an overwhelming task - I mean do you KNOW how much sodium, potassium, phosporous, protein etc are in all our foods? Of course we know - (well maybe not ALL of them but alot of them) we're sparkers......but I felt all alone on a cliff dangling - what COULD I eat?? I did the natural thing -- cried first, then started reading online (as an aside here - I would ONLY go to reputable sites - Mayo Clinic, National Kidney foundation, American Cancer society. etc) Bring forth the National Kidney foundation (NKF) -_ WONDERFUL SITE, WONDERFUL people in the front office (yes I called them!) She helped me to focus on WHAT did your dr. tell you to watch - and I said sodium - so she said "Well then that's all you need to focus on." Hmmm, easy as that! Well it hasn't been 'easy' but with the SP tools and trackers it has been very convenient and helpful. Since starting counting milligrams of sodium on April 6 -- I have lost a total of 26 pounds! Here I've been on SP since 2007 and couldn't --no change it to wouldn't do it but having a health scare has. SO my message to all of you out there thinking - I 'should' do this or I can't do this -- please I ask you DON"T WAIT - do it before you HAVE to - that's what I always knew it would take for me and unfortunately it has happened. My other message is - have your kidney function tested at least to get a baseline - I went from a nothing to a stage 3.....and I wondered where stages 1 and 2 went but the nephrologist said those stages usually go by without many symptoms (as did mine) So my journey continues -- probably the weightloss will as well but that's secondary to my 1st goal - keeping my kidneys as healthy as I can for as long as I can. I can only thank the Lord for what He does for me each day to help me get through it.

Glad cutting back on the sodium is helping you. Hubby is supposed to have no more than 2000 grams for his heart but he's a saltaholic and it's really hard to get him to cut back. But he's cut back about 1/4th of what he was having on a daily basis so it's a start.

Thankyou for this wonderful blog. We really do need to pay more attention to our diet don't we. The best thing we can do,is wat at home so we really know what is in our food. I know it is not always possible but it sure makes a difference. I am so happy your at feeling better now.

It is horrible going to doctor to doctor to find out what is wrong. I had pain in my knee for years and no one could tell me why. What didn't help is no tests were run. One of the reasons why I started my weight loss was to avoid future health issues
