Day 257 - On Campus

Friday, August 14, 2015

We had a faculty & staff meeting on our campus today that included a presentation from our campus chief of police who talked about shootings on campus and what we can do to plan and prepare for them. (A frightening topic - important, but terrifying that it is needed.) We also went over some technology for the new faculty hires (mostly part-time).

The rest of the meeting talked about some logistical issues with the fall semester. We had dinner in the campus restaurant (food cooked by our amazing culinary and baking instructors, with a couple of their former students).

I am starting to connect with a number of the faculty and staff already, and my relationship with the Dean gets stronger every day. We see things from the same perspective and point of reference, which will make working together fun and engaging. It is nice not to feel that there is a generational difference between us (even though there is).

I also talked with one of the Psychology instructors, who had been approached last semester to facilitate a student group for LGBT students. I have already offered my support and assistance, and I was grateful to hear that I don't have to be a faculty member to help. Any staff member can advise a student club or group. It will be a great way to get more involved with students on campus and show that anyone can be successful and have a great career.

I drove home euphoric and excited about Monday! My desk at work is already covered with papers, receipts, printouts of email messages, and other documents that I will have to deal with next week. Right now, that's the only thing that worries me. And that's a good thing!

Have a great weekend, Spark Friends! It's starting a bit early for me, but I plan on enjoying every minute of it!

Spark on!

OMG was this job made for you or what? I love reading all of this. The fact that you and your boss see eye to eye is so refreshing to read. I figure you will forget your old boss's name shortly if you haven't already.

So happy for you my friend.

Thanks for sharing your magnificent journey with us. Your excitement and good feelings about this job are palpable, and that is just awesome. I'm glad you are going to work with the LGBT youth. The youth of today are more inclusive, but sometimes families and even bullies can make life tough. I am glad you are going to be there as a voice of reason.

I am so glad you are having so much fun, that you like the Dean, and feel a symbiotic relationship with him. All good.

Spark on (as if anyone can stop you!!!)

And the doors and windows just keep opening! You're only "problem" will be pacing yourself so you don't take on too much before you get settled! I can feel your excitement! The fact you are surrounded by like minded people is exciting in and of itself! I think the environment is also the perfect setting for you! Win-Win!

I love the excited buzz you are feeling right now, Steve! What a great week you have had getting introduced to lots of new colleagues, as well as getting to know the dean better. You will feel at home in your office in no time and learn all the ropes - and you will know exactly where to go for help and advice if something flummoxes you! Wish I could send you one of my office survival kits, which I invented for my sister and a close friend when they landed new jobs. It is a little box containing handy things that make work easier and more fun, each small item labelled with an instruction... e.g. a tiny package of coffee beans covered in dark chocolate, labelled "for when someone will not let you put down the telephone receiver, although you a dying for a cup of coffee".... Have a great, long weekend.
