Burning at both ends

Monday, August 24, 2015

The proverbial candle, that is. For the burning, I mean. Because it occurred to me that the title I just typed might imply some great physical discomfort. Instead, I am just up late working, because I am a procrastinator, and have a hard deadline tomorrow morning, and thus am working until 4 am in preparation.

If I were a rational person, I would have done this work in daylight hours. Instead, I spent this afternoon in last-minute back-to-school shopping with the kid. We trekked out to the outlet mall and bought her a few new outfits. She's grown about 3 inches in the last year and filled out as well, and she's a teenage girl, so new clothes are a justified treat for her.

And hanging out with a happy kid, looking forward a little nervously to a new school year, was a treat for me. We also let her choose dinner out to celebrate her soccer goal yesterday and a new school start tomorrow, and she picked her favorite Chinese restaurant as usual. I had lots of veggies and some beef and shrimp, with nothing deep fried or greasy, so managed to stay on track. But I sat there as plates of deep fried saucy goodness walked past to other tables, and thought: wouldn't it be nice to just indulge on all of that one day? I admit I was momentarily tempted, but not enough to actually order any of it.

Sometimes the loss of sleep is worth it, particularly where family is concerned. Be glad you have this time with your daughter as they grow up so soon. Nice job on the food choices at dinner. Keep up the good work. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Sounds like the day you had with your daughter was worth the late night working (well, maybe not quite so late!). Those days are so fun. I take my now 15 year old granddaughter Hailey Jayne every year to get an outfit or two for first day of school, love it.

I'm a procrastinator, too, so I totally know where you're coming from. I had a deadline today, too, and spent the morning rushing to finish some student reports. It would have been far less stressful if I had done them all little by little in my spare moments over the past week, but nooooooo. I had to concentrate all the stress into just a few hours. I don't know; maybe that's actually more time-efficient, but it doesn't feel healthy when you're in the midst of it.

So glad you finished, and wasn't it great to have an outing with your daughter? I enjoy seeing my daughters deck themselves out as well. I share your belief that an occasional splurge on clothes is a justified treat, especially for high-school girls. It just seems to make them look forward more to going to school, and that's a very good thing.
