The family and I spent the evening getting nothing done. We packed the car with all our fishing gear, picked up the younger after soccer and fed her a rushed dinner, then picked up the older from college, and raced to the bait shop - which was closed. The second was closed as well.
Okay, so we then drove to the pier jutting into the lake and the family tried fishing with fake bait. Not one single nibble. But it was a glorious night. Already a beginning of fall coolness, with lovely light on the horizon. The kid brought the family camera - she is taking photography in school this year - and both kids took turns composing "artistic shots". We giggled when the hub got his line hopelessly tangled. I let the son ride shotgun so that I could ruffle his hair from behind every few minutes on the way home.
We watched one of the kid's fave shows on netflix until both kids passed out on the sofa. I woke them both up and herded them upstairs to bed. Everyone is safely snoozing now, and everything seems right with the world.
Tomorrow the kids are going to the field with the hub to take shots on the soccer goal. I'm going to make a quick run to the market to get a small cake and ingredients for the son's fave lunch. And we'll have a quiet family meal, and sing happy birthday badly out of tune, and I will hug the kid every chance I get before we take him back to campus. We're not getting anything done this weekend so far, but it has been so sweet.
