Tackling my fear and trying new things....

Thursday, September 10, 2015

It seems I come back to Spark a lot, and then stay for a while and when things get tough, I go away as if I failed. So silly. The Sparkers are such a great bunch of people and always willing to help, support, cheer on. I know, because I am one of them. So now that I am 46, I thought, what if I actually did some things I always wanted to do, but was too chicken to do? I actually tried out Kayaking for the first time the other day. Granted, it was quite windy at our lake and the kayak rocked quite a bit. My fear of water didn't take over, and I gave it a few minutes of honest paddling until I decided that this is not fun at all. I paddled back to shore and decided that swimming might be more up my ally. I don't own a bathing suit, so I just jumped in with my shorts and T-Shirt. And alas, I did enjoy it a lot more than usual. I am always suspicious of what might be lurking in the depth of our tiny, yet very clean and nice lake. Nothing pulled me under, so I went swimming a few times since. I noticed the last time, although I had a few "noodles" (floaty devices) with me, I swam further out than ever before, and I actually enjoyed it, and got a fabulous workout. I also live right behind a huge park with lots of hiking trails. I always find excuses not to go walking, but it takes me 3 minutes to driver there, and there are paved roads, as well as hiking trails. They even have very clean and neat bathrooms in several places and drinking fountains. So my excuses are wearing very thin. I went walking twice so far. It was a bit much for my poodle, who retired herself into the shade after 30 minutes, and I had to carry her back to the car. So I even got some strength training out of it. Next? I tell you, what's next. I will get myself a hula hoop. I used to hula hoop all the time and loved it. I don't know if that's a workout, but it will be fun. And then I am planning to dig my bike back out of the shed and take it to the park as well. And if I can afford it, I will get myself a YMCA membership in fall, so I can use their pool when it is too cold to get in to the lake. Snow shoeing in winter? Yes, please. I think I am going to have some fun.

I got a skipping rope for the same reason - I can't see why playing around can't be part of fitness. Hope the hoop's fun, let me know I might have to try that too :)
