My in-laws are leaving on Wednesday so we have only one more dinner together. It has been such a treat having them here. My FIL has about twenty words of English and my MIL has enough for basic casual conversation, so there is a limit to what we can talk about. There's a lot of gesticulation and asking the hub to translate.
Since enjoying life with tasty food is universal, our meals together are opportunities to make memories and to have something simple to talk about. I've put some thought into every dinner, and weekend lunches, during this visit. And now we are down to only one more dinner. How did the time fly by so fast?
My MIL is making her special meatballs tomorrow. They are so good that our kids *inhale* them. I don't think it's possible to eat food that fast while still chewing, so I think our son must swallow each bite whole! I am thinking of making a couple of cooked veggie dishes, and some baked potato wedges, to go with the meatballs. And we are going to heat up a special marzipan pastry that my in-laws brought, for dessert.
I'm both looking forward to our next dinner and also dreading it, because after that it will already be time to prepare for my in-laws' departure, and we probably won't see each other for another year. I just keep telling myself that I'm old now, and a year will go by pretty quickly. The thought may be true, but it's not really cheering me up!
