Should you get a "fat belt"? NO!

Friday, October 23, 2015

Remember these old "fat belt" machines? They are about as effective as any of those miracle diet programs out there that insist usage will make you into something you will never be. Look at them, they are EATING while they are exercising. If you can eat while you exercise, you are not working hard enough!!

One thing I have learned from my journey at Spark, is that unless you want to go back to the same shape, same person you were, you CANNOT consider this a diet. To win this one, you have to change the way you look at food FOREVER.

I have done this. I am at 99 pounds down, and will be at 100 before the end of the weekend. I have done this by religiously tracking my food, getting in a lot of fitness, and drinking a lot of water. No fat belts anywhere, just a lot of personal achievement.

I admit to having an advantage. I can dictate exactly what comes into my kitchen. I make meals just for me. Because I can do that, I determine every day what I will eat. I think it is critical that you have healthy food in the house to make meals, and that you clean out your kitchen from anything that is lousy for you and might be tempting. I eat clean every single meal, every single day. I do it just because I love fruits and vegetables, fish and don't eat much wheat, but if I do, it is always whole grains. You will seriously learn to love it.

Anytime you think that a quick fast, or a quick two-week diet, or even those expensive high calorie cans of junk might be the answer, just think about that "fat belt". What do you think it actually did? Jiggled fat. Didn't make it go away, unless you changed the way you ate, and I would bet that it didn't say anything about that. Those were the days that meat and potatoes and no vegetables and some pie were considered a good dinner. And, if you lived in the midwest, Dinner might have been at lunchtime, and then you had an additional supper....no chance that would ever work.

Get rid of that "fat belt" mentality. This isn't a quick trip, it's a journey. One you are taking just for you, because you are worth this, and you want, for once in your life, to be able to look in the mirror and just smile.

I'm getting there, and my smile gets bigger every single day.

Spark on.

My grandparents had one of those fat belts years ago and I remember thinking how fun it was! If it sounds to good to be true, it is to good to be true.
Being empty nesters now, it is easier to plan what we will eat and I do track religiously everything that I eat and how much exercise I get even in maintenance and it works for me. Even when my daughters lived at home, we had home cooked meals with a balance of meat and veggies and salads and I am so glad to say that my girls love veggies and salads and they even tell me they crave salads if they go a few days without them.
Way to go on your 100 lb weight loss! What an amazing accomplishment! emoticon emoticon

Where did you find that photo? That's hysterical! LOL

If you look at modern history, there have been countless belts, sauna suits, electronic ab machines, ropes, pulleys, platforms, ski machines, exercycles, and more that all offered the promise of fitness and health. I grew up watching Jack LaLanne and seeing ads for Charles Atlas all telling me I could have a rock-hard, muscular body with just a few simple exercises.

The reality is that I had to choose those exercise routines myself the hard way - BY DOING THEM! It isn't enough to watch them on TV, or to wrap yourself in Saran Wrap and melt away the pounds. You have to do the work to get the results!

Once you start following the Spark way, you realize that there is no magic potion except for the one you create for yourself! It's not "eye of newt" and "tongue of turtle" - it's jumping jacks and high knee kicks and dumbbell curls and burpees! It does work some magic, but only after some energy and heavy breathing and sweat!

Keep Sparking, Jane! Let me be the first to congratulate you on losing a century! Way to go, my friend!

Wonderful blog! And you are so right, it isn't just about losing weight. It is a whole package: emotional health, spiritual health, mental health and physical health. If you want a new way of life, these are what needs to be accomplished. Not easy but manageable.

How well I remember the fat belts which would be followed up by straddling a wooden roller contraption to work the inner thighs.

    Awesome Blog.

Oh those poor ladies, wasting their time while looking ridiculous! If fat belts, fasting, diet pills, cleanses, or any other gimics really worked, I guess we wouldn't have Spark!!

Lifestyle change is the way forward, and we're lucky to know more about health, nutrition and exercise than in days gone by.

There is no easy way for losing weight. There is no short cut. If we really want something we have to work hard for it!! Today I went to the scale and this week I lost another 2.5 pounds. A total of 17.5pounds lost in 1 month and 3 weeks. I am feeling so happy and I am starting to get that special light back in my eyes from feeling good that I am working on taking good care of me. No easy fix like wearing a fat belt that´s for sure.

    Have a fantastic weekend.

    Spark on!!

Word! My mom had a fat belt thingy she bought from a garage sale back in the late 60's. My sis and I would just on and have a blast. She used it to hang laundry. You're right, NO QUICK FIXES with this journey. Thanks for the reminder! You gotta post a pic of losing 100 lbs. I can't even imagine!!!! Aren't you so psyched???? Congrats, honey!

You seem to be on a bit of an aggressive mission here today! Everything you say is true, and I know it from experience. Yet I fell off the wagon and put some weight back on. I know I can get it back off by getting "back with the program", and I think it just comes harder to some than others.

Still not sure how I feel when I hear a woman say it is harder for a woman to lose weight. Look at you! I wonder if a woman did what I have done that says that could lose the kind of weight you and I have lost?

First off the picture is hilarious and made me laugh...thank you.

Secondly congrats on hitting the 100 mark...quite impressive indeed!

Thirdly you are absolutely right! I see people constantly telling me how they are gonna do the next big diet and lose all this weight. I get told constantly tracking my food doesn't work. You have gotten this far because you know what works and what doesn't. You have earned this new you....and you got there the right way.

Have a wonderful day and thank you for sharing.

YES YES YES . . . it IS a lifetime "thing". Having also lost and maintained (x 5 yrs.) 100 lbs. (20 prior to joining SP) I can say it is NOT easy, but you know, those are the times you have to suck it up , say OH WELL, OH WELL, OH WELL and move on.

    HUGS and great job!
