Day 363 - November Gratitude, part 27

Friday, November 27, 2015

I hope your Thanksgiving was as wonderful as mine was! I loved celebrating the day with new friends and cherishing new memories that were created last night. It was a very special evening, and it was so much fun cooking a big (but healthy) turkey dinner in the new kitchen!

This time of year always gets me thinking about family. When we're kids, our parents and siblings are our family. We think in very small terms about what it means to be "related." As we get older, we create new families. Sometimes those families are created with the person we fall in love with, (maybe) get married, and start our families.

In my case, not having any children of my own, I've learned to create a family with people who are too close to just be friends. Those people have become my chosen family. I love them as if they were my own biological brothers and sisters. Many of them shared good wishes for the holiday with me on Facebook. I cherish these relationships.

My parents are driving up from Sacramento tomorrow morning to spend a night with us. The house is now decorated for Christmas, and it looks great. I wasn't sure that we would be able to make our holiday decorations work in this new house, but my fears were unfounded. Everything looks great, and it was so much fun to decorate while listening to holiday music to get us into the spirit. This works so much better than getting into the Black Friday madness that has taken over our country. No thanks!

We were able to spend time with chosen family, and tomorrow we'll spend a day with biological family. They are equally special and equally loved. Thank YOU all for being part of my Spark family, which has become just as important to me. I'm incredibly blessed to have you all sharing this journey with me.

I am so thankful.

Being an 'only lonely' child with my parents long gone and our dear son in heaven DH and I look to our friends as family also. We have a group of friends here in FL that we have known for over 25 years. In transit FL that is pretty unheard of so we are blessed to have such a long term relationship. Some of the women in this group I truly look at as sisters.

DH still has his mother and sister back in Iowa but we don't get there often and stay in touch via telephone and the old fashioned way...writing letters.

The don't own a computer...can you EVEN believe that? emoticon

I'm happy your Thanksgiving was full of health, happiness and love! emoticon

Yes, the meaning of the holiday gets lost in the shopping frenzy and it is a shame. Less so in Canada where many attend services, or volunteer in serving meals to those who need some help. But Black Friday is creeping in with online shopping.

So glad you had an enjoyable and meaningful Thanksgiving. I sure do know what you mean about created families. I call them my soul family and it has grown over the years. Just like my biological family they are a blessing.
I am fortunate to have a third family, which is comprised of many species domestic and wild. It is a regular peaceable kingdom and a refuge, when I've had enough of the humans.
I also give thanks for many of the folks here at emoticon . It is amazing when someone that you've never met comes into your life and you click...what a pleasant surprise.
I hope you have a wonderful visit with your mom and dad.

And may everyday be a day for giving thanks.

Christmas decorations will generally always work even in new places. They fit the people who use them. I agree about Black Friday, I wouldn't want to be in that mess anywhere!!!

    Enjoy your week end!

I am glad that you have adjusted everything to your new home. People included. I, too, have very close friends that are family to me. We do not have a choice of what family we are born to, but DO have a choice of our new friends and family. I am grateful for all of it.

Love the concept and practice of a chosen family aka family of our own making!

I, too, have created new families over my lifetime. Since moving to Florida 12 years ago this is the first time I have my family near me. We have otherwise always been in different zip codes and not even within driving distance. A plane trip was usually a must.

What fun waking up and walking to your new kitchen and looking out over your lovely lake and new kitchen area. I know I NEVER tire of my lake view. I am looking at it now and see the shore birds trying to catch breakfast.

I know you will enjoy your parents visit.

Family is so essential to holiday time when we want to be surrounded by those we love and who love us! We want to feel that closeness and take comfort in it! It's the time for being actively grateful by sharing food, gifts and love! I totally understand the family of friends! This is what gives us community and reinforces what we feel for those that may not be blood relations but that we share a bond that is that is as deep!
I am so glad you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Enjoy you parents visit! And as MARINGAL said...pictures of decorations, please!
