Alternative to Nursing Homes

Saturday, November 28, 2015

I subscribe to an RV newsletter called Gypsy RV. I will be grieving not being able to continue the full time life style for quite a while. This part of Nick's blog made my heart sing.

"On a totally different subject, I got an e-mail yesterday from a very nice lady who wanted me to know that after reading my blog for the last three years she “ran away from home” at age 76 and is spending her first winter as a solo RV snowbird. She told me that her children all think she’s flipped her lid, but as she put it, “I’ve always wanted to sit out at night and watch the stars playing over the desert and listen to the coyotes singing, and then to watch the sunrise over the mountains. If not now, when? What’s the worst that can happen? I’d rather die staring at the sunset with a smile on my face than the ceiling of a nursing home room.” With that kind of attitude, I’m pretty sure she’s going to do just fine."

I can so identify with this. We are in the process of selling our RV. Our little 240 sq foot home that we modified to make our own. We took out the dining room and installed a large desk with tons of storage. We took out a chair and installed a desk for a small craft room. And we loved it. DH health took a turn south and we ended up buying a small home in a retirement village. We like it, but miss being Vagabonds.

There is something we can do. We can keep the Vagabond attitude and choose not to let our mindset grow old. Sure we may not be able to do the full time, but we can still go to some of our favorite spots and maybe rent a smaller unit for an occasional weekend. :) Who knows what is around the bend?

You have a positive attitude. We like to travel also - but we go by car. This is the life, being retired and free to go at your whim.

emoticon it's hard to let those things go that make us so happy... on the other you have so many wonderful memories of having traveled instead of regretting that you never did emoticon Great idea to go when you can.... there's so many places that will rent you an RV and have it all set up when you get there. i hope you can go again.... keep the faith emoticon

That's right. We have to have that positive attitude. No matter what, that helps.
