Day 380 - The Very Long Monday

Monday, December 14, 2015

I got a text message at 5:15am from my morning maintenance worker Frank telling me he was calling in sick. it's the time of year when a lot of people come down with illness, whether viral or behavioral (there's a lot of drinking happening this time of year). Needless to say, it put a wrench in my Monday. The Interim Maintenance and Operations Director (who supervises the M&O function our campus, although I manage the workers - confusing, isn't it?) called a sub to come in. The sub doesn't have keys, so I needed to meet him on campus at 7am to give him the keys. No problem.

I gave Joseph his keys and then tried to get work done. I did a little Sparking while my second pot of tea was brewing. My brain had not fully awakened. That ended up being the rest of the day. I had a meeting with my "drama team" - the Extended Opportunities Programs & Services (EOP&S) team - at 9:30am, then a meeting with all my student services groups at 11. The rest of the day was more of the same, meetings and more meetings. The day finally ended at 6pm when I drove home and then resumed answering emails until dinnertime.

I'm not complaining - really! - it was a good day, but full and long. I'm still getting lots of love from my co-workers that remind me what a great fit we are together, and many people thanking me for the great party on Saturday night. We had a great time too, and we're so glad you all came!

How do you deal with stress at work? I did my best to focus on staying healthy, doing lunges during phone meetings rather than reaching for the Lindor truffles that were leftover from the party.

Lunges over truffles. That's going to be my mantra for the next two weeks!

Keep Sparking, everyone!

Don't forget to come up for air Steve! Seriously, take some deep cleansing breaths in the minute you have before the next meeting. It helps refresh the body, mind and spirit.

Great idea!! I did knee extensions and lifts yesterday during lunch break! Doesn't it make you feel better?? I felt good about myself. One small choice that changed my body..

Choosing lunges over truffles on a long busy sedentary work day is great!
    Right what your body needed!

I try to reduce stress at work by tackling easy emails immediately,
and by making list of tasks at the end of working day +- marking top 5-6 to start next day with... with making the list, I formally take my mind off work till next morning, and it seems more manageable.

Oh, I love the lunging bit - I try to walk on the spot or stretch with my free arm while I am on the phone. Thank goodness the Person on the other end of the line does´nt have a clue what I am up to!
Have a good week, Steve. I am off to the medieval town of Quedlinburg in the eastern part of Germany, to meet up with my English SparkFriend Radooga on Thursday - working hard to get things done at the office before then! Hugs!

Your day started off hard and had too many meetings. At one job where I had too many meetings, I used to limit then to 10 minutes, and it worked. Everyone knew they needed to get going! You are lucky to have a job you love and great friends there!
