I'm so thrilled to be a 5% Challenger

Tuesday, January 19, 2016

I have taken part in the 5% challenges for about 3-4 years now. They come up every season and my team is the Teddy Bears. The challenge encourages us to lose 5% of our weight (or maintain if you are in maintenance) and we compete against several other teams to see if we can get more fitness minutes and points for doing healthy things.

The Teddy Bears are the most supportive team on the planet and I always feel encouraged to do as many fitness activity minutes as a I can so I don't let them down.

You may have heard that California is getting a huge amount of rain due to El Nino weather patterns after 4 long years of drought. Every day when I see rain drops on my bedroom, my first impression is "drat" How am I ever going to power walk today in that. I try to power walk for at least an hour every day as part of my fitness plan and also so I can stack up those fitness minutes for my team.. But considering we've had water rationing for about two years I can't feel too sad.

It has made me a very optimistic person. When other people look out the window and see heavy rain clouds and feel they can't go out for a walk, I'm able to look at the clouds and think "I better get out there now so I can be back inside before it starts raining" Today I was able to do 6 miles before it started raining again so optimism surely can pay off!

And I was able to put in 120 minutes to our total too! Go Teddy Bears!

Good for you. You are doing great. Most people wouldn't walk int the rain.
By the way, I fired the weather people. I live in So. Calif. We were supposed to get a lot of rain. Seems No. Calif. has hogged most of it lol. Oh well, they have had plenty of snow, and we get our water from the snow pack. So glad for No. Calif. Just wish we would get more.

So glad for the rain in California after all the drought! I don't mind walking in rain if it isn't too cold. Way to go getting in your walk!

I love the 5% challenges although I am on a different team. My son lives in California, so I know the mixed feelings about the rain. After the drought you have had, it is actually wonderful that you are getting some moisture back into the soil. Hopefully, the reservoirs can start refilling. You are thinking ahead and getting your walking in -- good for you!

Team support makes a difference. SP is so huge that finding friends with similar interests, often beyond just health/lifestyle issues, is so helpful.

I rarely participate in group challenges, oddball that I am, since I challenge myself in all kinds of ways, but I do spin for my favorite teams every day to see if I can help their position in the list.

Good luck and enjoy your walks, rain or shine.

Walking in the rain has always been enjoyable for me; though I yearn for the warm rains of my youth (rather than these cold northern California rains). I opted out of a workout today because of work commitments, but will make up for missed time tomorrow. I, too, love the support and encouragement I receive here at SparkPeople and especially my 5% Challenge Teddy Bear team. Go Bears!

You are a wonderfully positive friend and I so appreciate that! I miss the Bears...thought I'd try a different team and it wasn't so great. Then I couldn't reunite with my bears because we are in our crazy busy time at our store. I am on another team with you and really enjoy it.

Keep up those power walks...luckily we are rain proof! I'm so thankful you are finally getting the rain you so desperately need. Hugs to you and congrats for being such an awesome team sparker! emoticon
