Day 428 - Thank You for the Music

Monday, February 01, 2016

Sometimes it's not the SONG that makes you emotional... it's the people and things that come to your mind when you hear it...

I'm watching the "live" (tape-delayed) remake of the musical Grease on Fox TV tonight. It brings back such memories of seeing it on stage in Indianapolis back in 1974, and then seeing the movie version with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in 1978. I've probably listened to the soundtrack of the film about a thousand times.

I had the honor of marching in a gay pride parade in NYC with Didi Conn back in the early 1980s. We were all marching together, and I loved hearing her stories about making the film. I had loved her in "You Light Up My Life" and it was such a thrill to be able to talk to her face to face.

My partner at the time worked in a building in the garment district of Manhattan where Stockard Channing lived. His office would get her mail, and sometimes he got the opportunity to deliver it to her. I never got to meet her, but I absolutely adored her as Rizzo in Grease, and I made sure that he told her so.

It's funny how watching a show on TV can bring back such vivid memories.

I'm so grateful for music, for the wonderful place it has in my life, and the connections it creates in my heart and my memories. I know it means a great deal to most of you too. Those shared experiences where music is present are meant to be cherished.

Have a wonderful week ahead. It's a new month! Time for new goals and renewed motivation. Use music to get you moving and to spark joy in your life throughout February!

Keep Sparking, Friends!

I feel the same about Grease! The music is so good and the memories that I have attached to it are just as good! I have recorded the show but haven't watched it yet. Maybe tonight. Music does that to me all the time, transports me to a different place and time.

I think I have listened to the soundtrack of Grease! a gabillion times and never tire of it. Nobody can do it better than the 1978 version. Another classic one to keep that way.

You really had wonderful experiences and memories of that time and those great actors! I know you do cherish them!

Yeah! New month--fresh start for those who need it.

Music is a large part of our life. We use it to bring back memories, make new ones or just to get up and move to the groove when we need to.

Music can hit all areas of our hearts. Have you ever heard a piece so beautiful that tears were running down your face? Music sure does make treadmill walking and swimming laps go faster. How grateful that it is part of our lives.

I enjoyed the Fox show last night. Grease is far and away my favorite musical. I thought "Sandy" and the Principal were good choices. But, Travolta was hard to match. I believe that the parts where Danny had the staccato laugh made that difference more noticeable.

But, I did feel "old" last night. Felt the opening number was one of the highlights. Thought it was Pink! and had to google it to find out who the artist was. Since I have never heard of her, I felt I had passed the high water mark in being in the know for current music.

P.S. my memories kindled were my college days and the buddy I saw it with. Not many movies do I remember who I was with!

Yes, what a treat we all had last night. WOW. I loved it.

Great stories you have Steve and such wonderful memories. Yes, that is exactly what a song does: transport us to a time and place and with a certain person or people that for us the season maybe over, but ahhhhhh the memories.

Once again thanks for a great "memory Sparking blog."

And you have a wonderful new month (can you believe it's February, I mean where did January go) too. HUGS, Pat

On my 60th, my daughter and son took me to the Hollywood bowl for a Grease singalong performance. And yes, DiDi was there. She had her 10 mins of fame in the 70's and seemingly has never gotten over it! Ha!
