The kid's spring break starts on Friday, so we are going to take her on her first college tour. I've put together an itinerary of 11 colleges in 7 cities, in 3 neighboring states. I've booked a bunch of hotels and registered for a pile of tours and info sessions. (My excel file keeping track of everything is a work of art!)
The kid's a sophomore and has only a vague idea of what she might want to do, so this will give her a chance to explore different types of colleges and get her thinking about what she likes and hates. And since we won't have time for a summer vacation, this is going to be what passes for "fun" this year.
I'm a little worried that all the walking will be a challenge for the post-knee-surgery kid. But she's improving daily. She can walk/stumble around the house without crutches now, although they are still needed for stairs. And she is off the ibuprofen, so the pain is easily manageable now, knock on wood. It's the kid's choice to do this tour, and I figure we can always skip a campus or few if she's feeling too tired.
And now for the next step of the planning: looking for restaurants along the way. The kid and I love watching food shows, so I'm going to see if any of the "diners, dives, and drive-ins" are along our route. We're also going to check out some historical sites - hopefully the kid will be up for it.
It's both exciting and sad to think of our "baby" going off to college in a couple of years. So I'm going to enjoy every day of this trip together. And I think that being far from our pantry, and being on the move most of the time, will make it easier to avoid snacking. That's my plan, anyway - fingers crossed!
