Two down

Saturday, March 26, 2016

We just checked into our second hotel and have toured two campuses with the soccer kid. She loved the place we visited yesterday - it was our college kid's second choice a couple of years ago, so we've seen it before. The students were well trained; every time a tour group passed, they would grin and wave manically. Or would that be maniacally? Anyway, it was a lot of fun.

Today's visit was more sedate. The campus is old and pretty but it's Saturday of spring break so was very quiet. Still, the kid liked it enough for us to go back after lunch and take pictures. Back in the car, on the highway, the kid said: college tours are fun! So that's a good sign.

We spent the last leg taking turns picking songs - mostly pop and rock songs from the 70s and 80s. And we sang along to them badly. At least it kept us awake!

We have found healthy lunches on campuses, but dinner last night was tragic. We were in a tiny town with two bars and one pizza place. I ordered a salad but it was just a plate of cut up iceberg. To avoid pizza, I had chicken wings - barely an improvement, I admit! Tonight we are in an actual city so will have more choices.

My mom and I were in a pizza place Friday night and had the same experience. Salad was served family style with iceberg lettuce, too much Ranch dressing and croutons. Yuck.

I can sure sympathize with your being in "a tiny town with two bars and one pizza place." Sounds like my childhood. But even some bigger towns are just as tragic if you're on a road trip. I mean, exit the Interstate and what do you find? Fat, salt, and sugar! A plate of cut up iceberg! Oh dear, Bemused, I hope tomorrow brings better luck!

So glad to hear that your daughter is loving her college tour. Your daughter--young, smart, hardworking, happy, and hopeful--is exactly what America needs. I hope she finds the best possible fit for her talents and tastes.
