The race between the weight and the wheelchair

Tuesday, March 29, 2016

I was recently told by my orthopedic doctor that he expects me to be confined to a wheelchair within the next year to two years. He says that it isn't common for someone my age to have such severe arthritis in both knees and both hips. He says that my worst hip will be what cripples me, and the only way I would be able to keep walking is if I were to have a hip replacement before it gets much worse.

Unfortunately, they don't operate on people who are as heavy as me. Although he didn't give me an exact figure, it was more or less implied that I will need to lose around 100 pounds in order to have the surgery.

I have been struggling with my weight for a long time and have had trouble getting around since I was injured about 15 years ago. This makes it very difficult for me to get the exercise I need, and as hard as I try, the weight doesn't come off very quickly. At this time it is a race between the weight and the wheelchair. I could use all the prayers I could get right now, as I fight to stay out of the wheelchair.

Thank you all for your suggestions, encouragement, and for your prayers. I have been doing stretches and any exercises I can do in bed before getting up, then trying to incorporate other activities into my day as much as possible. I have been losing some weight, but have a long way to go. I am just hoping I can get the weight off in time to prevent the wheelchair from being necessary.

I read a book about mindful eating. Maybe that would help
And finding nice things to do and beeing with nice people where eating is not the main subject

So sorry you are going through this. It must be hard to exercise. Try doing what the others have suggested--chair exercises and stretches. Concentrate on what you are eating and track it on the start page. You will be able to know if you are getting enough calories and the right nutrition. Will join the others praying for you.

This is your time! I've dealt with back pain for 30 years, and multiple chronic pain issues for the past 20 years, My immune disorder is the cherry on top that says I can't take NSAIDs to combat the inflammation that causes the pain,

What I did when I finally got sick and tired of being sick and tired, was to start out small, and push the envelope to see what I was able to physically do in a day that would not put me into a "flare" that knocked me out of commission for a day. I found that if I did 20 minutes of stretching, I was able to make it through two mile long walks with my dogs (I'm working on their loose leash walking in two groups before I put the whole pack together, so I don't get injured). It took me 2 to 3 weeks of building up from ground zero to feel confident that no matter how bad I felt, I could at least do that much each day.

Each day I look at chair workout videos in 3 areas: yoga, cardio, and strength training. I watch them several times before doing them the first time. I stick with videos in the 10 to 15 minute range for now. I have a weekly schedule where I rotate through those 3 disciplines, with one day of rest. So once I get through my stretching and two walks, I add in some video work on the days that I can.

You have an amazing opportunity to be your own hero! Start small, find your balance, and be your best every day! emoticon
