Day 489 - I'm No Fool

Friday, April 01, 2016

I looked for a good April Fool's Day meme involving Donald Trump, but didn't see anything appropriate for SP. I certainly hope that Trump is just an April Fool's joke, but I'm afraid that he's playing his supporters for fools instead.

The other day I read the chapter in my Management textbook on Leadership. In the section that describes charismatic leadership (and I would say that both our current president and candidate Trump are both charismatic), the book delves into the differences between ethical and unethical charismatic leaders.

"Ethical charismatics provide developmental opportunities for followers, are open to positive and negative feedback, recognize others' contributions, share information and have moral standards that emphasize the larger interests of the group, organization, or society."

"By contrast, unethical charismatics control and manipulate followers, do what is best for themselves instead of their organizations, want to hear only positive feedback, share information that is beneficial only to themselves, and have moral standards that put their interests before everyone else's."

("Effective Management," 7th ed., Chuck Williams, Cengage Learning, 2016, p 404)

The book goes on to say that many people are drawn to unethical charismatics, and that is obvious in this presidential election cycle. What is terrifying is that someone like that could actually have the potential to be elected as the president of these great United States.

Our most important tool in the toolbox is our vote. Every eligible citizen in the US needs to vote in the upcoming election. If you have trouble getting to the polls, I hope your state has vote-by-mail or absentee voting options available. Encourage everyone you know to go out and vote. Never in our history has every vote been more important.

Don't be fooled, but make sure to keep Sparking!

As a Canadian I can only hope this Trump person will go away . Quickly. He scares us, and is the total opposite of our PM Justin Trudeau. He's not just a pretty face, he's a reflection of our country's youth and compassion for equality. Google him.

I think you are right in saying, Steve, that the next elections will be very important indeed for your country and all the other countries that are strongly influenced by the United States of America's politics and politicians. Here in Germany a lot of people are worried that Trump is not just a bad joke - me too!

The "Crazy Train" or rather, "Trump Force One" (really??) has been in my neck of the woods for the last week. Our primary in WI is on Tuesday, and sadly, our Governor and his buddies on the right, have made it EXTREMELY difficult for people to cast their ballots without a state picture ID. But that's another topic for another day....
I'm still undecided between Bernie and Hilary so I'd better decide pretty quick!

From the replies all of us who have responded are anti-Trump and I can't say I'm surprised. But let's take a moment to get past his mindless ideas about women, billing walls, having the world go nuclear and a pitiful lack of knowledge about just about everything.

Let's look at what he touts to be his greatest and only necessary qualification to be President of the United Stated of America. His business acumen, he would have us believe that because he has made a lot of money he is successful. What was the price of that success? Multiple bankruptcies, which caused many of his suppliers and contractors to fail, but protected his wealth. The dirty little secret that you can borrow money to start or expand a business, incorporate that business, pay yourself and family members millions of dollars. Have the businesses fail, pay pennies on the dollar on your business debts and keep every penny of your personal fortune.

That is not my idea of someone who is in the least bit qualified to even run for President!

I absolutely cannot EVEN believe that some people in our group admire this big bag of braggadousciousness! They pin everything on the fact that he's a fixer, and a winner because he has made millions! Exactly the kind of brain wash that makes me crazy!

I once read a series of books about a president or world leader being put in place that was actually the 'anti~christ' he was extremely charismatic but hated women and so many other things.

I honestly think our world will come to their senses before they vote a nut case like this guy in.

It baffles me that people act like lemmings sometimes...but I guess that's exactly how Jonestown happened!

In all honestly...the whole electoral thing is a reflection of the world today and it's pretty doggone depressing! I've even researched retiring in France or Italy but I don't think thats the answer either.

All we can do is hang in, hang on...and VOTE! emoticon

Love your leader blog...can you consider running!?! emoticon

All he needs is an orange wig and a rubber clown nose,, He really needs the wig. There is no accounting for using brain matter here. We must pick the lesser of all the evils, vote with conviction, our gut.

Great definitions of ethical and unethical charismatics.

I saw a good meme: our (Hungary's) prime minister with Donald Trump's hair... sadly, they have the unethical charismatics in common : (

    Amen!
I just can't even begin to say how I feel about Trump running for PRESIDENT...of the United States of America!!! He is a pompous, egocentric man who has no respect for women and their place in society, let alone the average middle and lower middle class citizen! It makes me sad that people actually believe this man can improve anything!!!
I so hope people will get out and vote!!!
    Hugs,
    Mary

The "ethical / unethical" distinction in leadership is spot-on. Kind, compassionate leaders don't have the appetite to run for political office as it is such an egocentric, mud slinging environment and this is the circus we ate left with. I agree...
