High Blood Pressure Scare, and Prayer Request

Friday, April 08, 2016

My blood pressure usually runs anywhere from low to the lower normal range. Today I had a couple of mild chest pains so I decided to check my blood pressure just to be safe. I don't generally worry too much about a few minor chest pains because I get these quite often from anxiety, but since I got a new blood pressure wrist cuff I decided to try it out. My blood pressure was quite high. For those who experience high blood pressure on a regular basis, mine might not seem that high at 148/80, but mine usually runs anywhere from 70-90 as the top number and around 50-60 as the bottom number, so this is very high for me.

The last time I had chest pains and my doctor sent me to the hospital, the cause of my pains was that my potassium level was extremely low, so as soon as I read my pressure, I took a couple of potassium supplements, then waited a few minutes and rechecked my pressure. The cuff came up with error after error, but when I was finally able to get a reading, my blood pressure had gone up to 154/82, but at least I was no longer having any pains. This is extremely high for me, since the highest I have ever seen mine was 159/? one time in my life, and never seen the top number go over 121 during anything less than an extreme situation. I'm pretty sure the errors were a user error since I had my son check his BP and he had no problems with the cuff.

I continued to monitor my BP over the next hour and it is now down to 130/80, which is still high for me, but much better than it was. I will wear my blood pressure wrist cuff for a while and keep checking every 15-20 minutes for a while to see if it continues to drop, or if I need to visit the ER today. Prayers would be appreciated.

My blood pressure came down a quite a bit throughout the night. I called my daughter-in-law, who is a nurse, and they came over and spent the day with me today. I'm feeling much better, although my bottom number is a little higher than is usual for me, it is within normal ranges now. I have an appointment set up with my doctor on Wednesday, but will check with him sooner if I have more problems with it. Thanks all.

You are wise to calm down and keep checking your bp. From what I understand the bottom number is the one you have to worry the most about. But any time you have chest pain, that is a concern! I pray that you are feeling better now.

I think you should consult your doctor in not too long. This about breast pain needs an explanation.
Have a nice and relaxed weekend

My doctor is an hour away, and the office is closed today so the only option would be the ER. I don't want to go if not necessary though, so will continue checking it for a little while longer. If it goes back up I will go there. Thanks for your comment

I have been checking it every 15 minutes while just sitting at my desk and it is now at 131/84 with no chest pains. I will continue to watch it, and have my son standing by if I feel the need to go to the ER. Thank you for your comments and prayers.

If your bp stays higher than what is your normal I would check with your doctor and see what is going on. If the chest pains come back you probably should go to ER as a precaution

Praying. By the way I have a wrist bp cuff too and it says to sit quietly and still 10 minutes before taking your bp. Some say 15 minutes. If you had chest pains you were right to check it. I have high bp and anxiety too as well as chest wall pain.
