Healthy living is like baseball

Saturday, May 21, 2016

My seven-year-old son is in his second season of baseball. Last year he was hitting pretty well. This year he completely lost his ability to make contact with the ball. I know he felt really bad about it. I told him to not be so hard on himself. I took him into the yard twice this week to practice. I suggested he keep working at it and we tried to tinker with his batting stance to see if we could correct the problem. I told him he had to be patient and keep working at it until he found what worked for him. Today he had two hits in two at-bats, scored a run, had great fielding and was awarded the game ball!

This is a lot like working on our health, isn't it? We need to not be so hard on ourselves. We need to keep trying and tinkering with our plan until we find what works for us. We need patience and persistence. The worst thing we can do is give up.

We wouldn't be overly-critical of a seven-year-old learning to play baseball (I hope). We shouldn't be overly-critical of ourselves while we are learning to take better care of our health. With patience, persistence and a bit of tinkering, I know we can all be successful.
