My last blog post was a really difficult place for me.
I've made progress in two weeks.
I got my leg swelling under control, amazingly. I've been battling this venous insufficiency for years and it has been painful, annoying, and caused life-threatening complications because of leg infections that have led to 10 day hospital stays, missed work, outpatient IV therapy antibiotics, and thousands of dollars in medical bills. It has also led to some serious depression.
So this week, I called my provider. I'm tired of the leg wraps, they aren't working because when my swelling decreases, the wrap sags and falls down, then my leg isn't wrapped and it swells again, but lumpy and in odd places. I'm having to drive 40 miles from my home and missing work to go twice a week. She told me to go to the pharmacy and get fitted for compression hose.
I went to an old, small-town family owned pharmacy that my provider recommended. I got there about 10 minutes before closing and was helped by the owner. He was so kind. Although my prescription hadn't gotten there yet, he said he would fit me. He lifted up my big swollen/lumpy leg like he was fitting Cinderella for her lost slipper. He got me a pair of compression socks that fit like a glove and let me wear them out of the store, right at closing time. I'll actually wear these because they don't pinch and they do the job perfectly. I asked him why I didn't come in to see him years ago.
One problem down. Being proactive about my health problems seems to be paying off.
Today, I met with the dietician. I asked her to help me with structure and accountability. Best of all, she said that her services are free as part of the weight loss program at the hospital. She told me about a support group for people who have had or are considering weight loss surgery. I told her about the surgeon who told me I was too big for lap band and she let me know they are getting a new surgeon next month!
I am feeling hopeful. I am being proactive. I have another medical appointment on Monday to deal with some other problems I have.
I also lost 14.5 lbs. I'm not sure if it's fluid weight from my leg or if it's weight.
I also found a gym buddy at my office. She and I started out yesterday, we both are battling some health problems and are about at the same level so we walked on the treadmill for 15 minutes. My hips, thighs, and legs are sore today, so I know it did me some good. It's not where I want to be, but to do this, I have to accept myself where I'm at.
