I've been trying to get out a little more lately, but I have to admit that the heat and humidity is making it really hard right now. My son Cliff is so supportive and when we are both off on the same day he is usually ready to go hiking with me. We've been trying to head to the higher elevations in the mountains to avoid some of the heat
Last week we headed to Mt. Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi River. We figured that would be the coolest spot around here, and we were right. It was a comfortable 71 degrees and the views were amazing. Here's a few pics I took while we were there.
Then a few days ago we were both off and decided to head west again. Along the way I remembered reading about the ghost town of Henry River Mill Village. Located near Hickory, North Carolina, it was the filming location for District 12 in the movie The Hunger Games. We decided to stop there to explore the area. It was much larger than I thought it would be. What a great time we had walking and checking out all of the old houses and the area.
My son Cliff.
Many of the houses were locked and posted no trespassing, but a few that were in better shape were clearly left open for visitors to see.
For those of you who saw the movie, this one was Katniss' house in the movie. Cliff had to do some phone googling. The filled in left door with a window added is a dead giveaway, as it is the only one like it.
So that was our two fun trips over the last ten days. I'm ready for cooler weather so we can get outdoors more!
Hope you are all doing well and staying cool while getting in some exercise.
So glad you and Cliff are having these wonderful trips. I was thrilled to see so many shades of blue in the first two photographs. Would love the time to paint all that color in oils! The spot near Hickory was news to me , but, very interesting. Now I want to go there! Did you find a nice restaruant near there? 1463 days ago
