Today was a very special day for our family. We celebrated "Gotcha Day" with our oldest daughter, Lilia. We brought her home from Guatemala nine years ago and our family has been blessed with much joy and love. Lilia is my hero!
The last two weeks have been extremely difficult for our sweet girl. She entered public schools for the very first time after living in the Philippines for the past 7 years. Not only is she adapting to a new culture, but she is also adjusting to life without her younger sister and all of her friends. Lilia is a special needs child and suffers from separation anxiety. Each morning my heart breaks as we drop her off at school, her little bottom lip quivers and her big eyes fill with tears. Still, she smiles and waves as she is walked into the building. I am not sure who is more excited when 3:30 rolls around, her or me!
As we were celebrating today I thought about how much I have learned from her in the last two weeks as she has overcome the many obstacles and fear. Three things I want to apply to my life when things are tough:
1. Make friends, they make your day more fun!
2. It is okay to cry a little. Your friends will know you are sad and can give you a hug to make you feel better.
3. Just whisper to God and remind him you are a little afraid, He will hold you tighter and then you don't feel so scared.
I hope someday I grow up to be as smart, kind, funny and brave as my daughter. I am a blessed mommy for sure!
