Start with where you are

As I read others' comments and blogs I see several common threads. Many are upbeat but there are a number of us who hit a plateau or a bump in the road and get thrown off track. We struggle and get impatient or discouraged. What to say? What to do? Here's my little pep talk this morning.

Grab yourself by the collar, give a little shake, and... just start with where you are.

Now I've been a believer in baby steps for a long time. The concept of beginning a do-over right where you are goes hand in hand with taking those little steps. The key is to make yourself successful and then do it again and again and... next thing you know you have motivation to keep going.

Need some examples to get yourself up off that couch today? Walk to the sink and drink a glass of water. Done. Walk to each window of each room where you live and look outside. Done. Want to add a bit of excitement to that house walk? March in place as you look outside or do bicep curls or flex your fingers. Done. Ready for lunch? Measure your portions Sounds overly simplistic? Well then create your own baby steps from where YOU are - run an extra half mile, do an additional set of intervals or increase your weights. Each of us is in a different place but taking those baby steps is still a move forward in a positive direction.

Motivation is a tricky thing. Hard to pin down but, like other habits and muscles, the more we work it the more likely we are to keep doing it. And here's an added bonus - it costs $$ us nothing! Plus we can start again as many times as it takes. No judgement - just do it.

Pick yourself up,
Take a deep breath,
Dust yourself off
And start all over again.
