If you always do what you've always done... AHA!!

Thursday, December 15, 2016

We've all heard this famous motivational quote - attributed to many over the years from Henry Ford to Tony Robbins. It used to get bantered around my work place whenever they introduced yet another "innovation."

For a relatively intelligent person, it sometimes takes me a while to turn on the lighbulb and have one of those "AHA" moments which happened this morning after I stumbled over this quote for the hundredth time or so. It pretty much sums up my history of weight loss efforts and failed maintenance perfectly. Like so many others, I restrict my calories and eat "diet" foods until I reach a goal. Then I go back to enjoying "real" food in portions that are unmeasured. Exercise dwindles. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why the scale creeps back to where it started... or higher. So why do I keep doing this to myself??

It's that time of year. As we celebrate the season, it's also a time to reflect. My SP reflections remember where I was at this time last year. Simply put - there was less of me. I wore clothes that will stay in the closet this year. I remember feeling much happier with myself.

So as I turn the page on 2016, my new goals will incorporate this long overdue "AHA!" It's time to take all I've learned and all that SP and SP Friends have to offer and come up with a life plan. Heard it before? Perhaps. But perhaps this time will be different and that is what we call hope. And what better time to turn that page than now - during this season of hope.

I'm worried about that, too. So far, I've maintained my weight loss since October. I'd like to lose more pounds, but that isn't in the cards right now. I'm not willing to cut calories right now. It's low enough. I find that hanging out with the long term maintainers helps me stay in the game mentally.

It was really tough for me to figure out that the calorie range I had to adopt to LOSE the weight is pretty much the calorie range I've had to sustain to MAINtain the weight loss.

Gahhhh. Not always happy about it. But: hard truth for me: this is permanent.

I am having similar reflections right now. Although I have lost some weight this year, I am not where I wanted to be. So it's time to change it up a bit - again - to see if I can do better in 2017. I find it challenging to get into a routine that makes sense and that I can stick to. I've actually stopped "dieting" because it's hard for me personally to eat all the right foods and my DH would hate it. If we don't have something that resembles Pizza at least twice a month I think he'd leave! But I can make a healthier pizza with a whole wheat crust and my own toppings.

Anyway, thanks for the reminder! I be thinking of ways to change it up over the next few days.

    That is a great AHA!
I need to adopt that mindset and make 2017 a better year!
    Thanks for sharing.
