Good riddance 2016

Thursday, December 29, 2016

I am so glad this year is over!! It has been a rough one for me and lots of people I know & care about. And I’m not even talking about the awful election season we had!!

The beginning of the year started with me being treated for a recurrence of Lyme disease. I had begun to feel old symptoms returning from my first experience in 2009 – tiredness, headaches, numbness in my left leg. Thankfully, I found a wonderful, supportive dr who I have grown to love. I took many different antibiotics from January thru July. She also put me on Vitamin D, probiotics, and Concerta (an ADHD med that has helped, a bit, with the brain fog and tiredness).

I thought after the Lyme cleared, I would be “good to go”, but NO. Then I started getting urinary tract infections. I got 3 in a 4 month period. And each one would take two different antibiotics to clear up. Finally, the dr sent me for a kidney ultrasound that revealed – kidney stones!! The first urologist was unable to read a CT scan that clearly said there were stones & kidney swelling. After suffering for 2 weeks, I decided to find another doctor. The second urologist turned out to be one I had used 4 years before. He informed me that the stone I now had was probably the same one I had 4 years ago when he last saw me. Being in pain and alone (read – not making good judgment calls), I allowed this dr to treat me again, even tho he did not treat me adequately 4 years ago (because I still had the same stone!!).

Butcher/Veterinarian/Dr (what my hubby now calls him) did what was supposed to be a “simple” thru the bladder procedure to remove the stone. However, after “digging around in my kidney for 20 minutes”, he couldn’t find the stone. He sent me home with a stent & an infection. I called a third urologist as soon as I got home from the hospital. This was on Monday. My appt with the Mayo dr was on Friday.

I am referring to this stage of my life as my Abraham/Hagar moment. I really wanted to go to the Mayo clinic. However, when I first started calling urologists, they were scheduling 3-4 weeks out. Turns out, that is exactly when I got into see them! I just caused myself needless pain and suffering along the way by not waiting!!

The Mayo doctors have been wonderful! The 7-9mm stone the ultrasound showed turned out to be lots of little stones hiding behind a wall. I have passed over 40 stones since Dec 11th. I am still waiting for the report to see what they are made of so I can adjust my diet & keep from ever going thru this again!! I will have some more tests run in a few more weeks.

And of course, the kids cant stop their medical issues either. I just have two kiddos left at home, two boys 14 & 12. They both started karate this year & have loved it! Well, the 14 year old fell one night in class. His foot hurt, but we just watched it for a week. Turns out, it was broken! Then, after he recovered from that, his knee started hurting him again, from an old injury he had a couple years back. Back to the orthopedic dr we went. Luckily, we have the best ortho!! Anyway, 14 year old has a genetic issue with his knees that will require surgery & pins. But he has to stop growing first. Poor kid is already the tallest in the family at 6 foot!! We will go back in a few months to see if his growth plates have closed.

I don’t know why it seems like our family spends so much time at doctors offices. But I am truly thankful to God for the gift of my husband’s job & wonderful health insurance. I am also thankful to live in such a blessed country that has these many, many medical advances!! I know it can be so much worse & I will do my best to walk this path with a smile on my face.

Needless to say, with all that has been going on, my health and weight loss goals have been put on the back burner, and that is ok right now. My “One Word” for 2017 is REBUILD. I plan to rebuild my health, my home, and my holiness habits. It will take baby steps, but that is ok. I’m not sure how much I will be on Spark People, but I will be putting into practice all the great info I have learned here over the years. I, of course, have been drinking copious amounts of water. My hubby & I have started back on our after lunch walks. I’m hoping to start stretching/yoga again soon. By the end of the year, I would love to take a couple of karate classes with my boys! We also have many outdoor projects that I’ve not been able to do that I’m itching to get back to (sawing wood, cleaning up the barn, redoing the chicken coop). And I would like to start quilting again. Here’s hoping 2017 is a much better year than 2016!
