Learning to Love Working Out

I used to hate working out and, although I started many exercise programs and even maintained them for a while, I never really enjoyed it. I found that I would miss a day for some reason and that led to another and pretty soon I was back to doing nothing. That all changed about four years ago when I made up my mind to get serious about getting healthy and losing weight. I'm not an outdoor person and live at least 35 miles from the nearest gym, so I started an indoor walking program using exercise videos. I started with short sessions and increased them gradually. After a while, I craved variety so I added strength training using videos and YouTube workouts. Since then I joined SparkPeople and began to read about different techniques and explored even more types of workouts. Today I do a combination of cardio, strength, yoga, and Pilates each week and I meditate for about ten minutes every day.

I've discovered that I actually enjoy working out now and, if I have to miss a day or even more for whatever reason, I just pick up where I left off. I find that, for me, it's best to work out first thing in the morning. It's done for the day and I feel more energized throughout the day. I plan my exercises weekly so I have a balanced program that takes my daily schedule into account. I get my clothes and any necessary gear together the night before so I'm ready to go since I'm not a morning person. I use a variety of techniques as I mentioned before and a variety of instructors although Jessica Smith and Adriene Mischler are my two favorites by far. Both are on YouTube and Jessica also has DVDs. Finally, I use SparkPeople and social media connections to help me stay accountable and celebrate my successes.

I forgot to mention that I was successful in losing about 60 pounds the first year to reach my goal and have maintained it ever since although I struggle with my eating at times. Never give up!

    I do not like to work out either due to chronic pain issues. This blog has truly inspired me to try and do similar things I never ever thought to plan out my week for working out. I know I should start now! But I have a son whom you have probably already heard from many of my posts has a wound on his behind. He is paralyzed since birth from a birth defect Spina Bifida. It is late here and he has wound care clinic in the morning. So I have several things to do tonight. It is my teenage son's 16th birthday. It has been fun.

    I am having shoulder surgery on the 18th of October for a torn rotor cuff. I think by following your lead I am going to be working mainly on strengthening that shoulder as much as I can without injuring it more. I tore it about 21 years ago and now it is significantly tore but at the time it would of been a bad idea to have it repaired as I was still lifting disabled kids around so it would of just made it worse.

    I need to lose about 30 pounds minimal before surgery to insure that the table they sit you up on will be sturdy enough. It has a weight limit on it.

    Can I ask your first name please? I looked all through your comments and such and didn't see it ever mentioned. It probably has been on the Champions page and I just didn't keep up on it as I am terrible with trying to connect Spark names w/ real names..
