Robin baby comes to visit!
Thursday, May 18, 2017
It appears that the baby robins in my neighbors yard have fledged. This little guy showed up on my windowsill this morning:
It appeared as though he couldn't see me through the window, because he didn't respond at all as I got close. I watched him for hours today. Mom came by every now and then to feed him, and in between times he napped. Newly fledged robins don't fly very well. Once they leave the nest, they find hiding places to spend their days, and mom and dad run around to visit each one to give them food. They'll continue to do this until the little ones get better at fending for themselves, about 3 weeks after leaving the nest.
Finally, this afternoon, my cat Bear woke up from his nap and decided to check out the neighborhood. He was fascinated.
The problem was that by that time the light had changed and the birds could see in. Each time one of the parents showed up to feed the chick, they'd get one look at Bear through the window and take off. He wouldn't leave the window until I finally called him to dinner. I guess his motto is one in the bowl is worth two on the sill!
