I am not really a people person.

When I'm placed with a person or groups of people I don't know, I try to ask them questions, because we all have heard that people like to talk about themselves. The thing I've noticed though, is that nobody asks me anything. There's little or no reciprocal questioning coming my way. Nobody seems interested in getting to know me. Sure every now and then someone might ask me something, but not very often. And if I try to volunteer my thought or opinion without prompting, the reaction is as if I've been rudely butting in. People just go on talking about themselves, sometimes as if I'm not even there, if it's a group.
I'm not really hurt by this. Just puzzled and a little frustrated. Does everyone just need a refresher in social skills and the art of conversation? I could easily skip all the pleasantries and be very happy, but at least I'm making an effort. I just wish others would do the same.
