Four Baby Flying Squirrels
Saturday, September 02, 2017
This past Monday our nephew brought over four tiny flying squirrels in a cup. They are probably around five weeks old and the cutest little things. Such a sad story though. The tree they were living in needed to be cut down and when it was falling the men noticed a squirrel run out of a hole and around the tree. Unfortunately, it came down and landed on the mama squirrel. They searched the tree and found the four babies. They were fully furred and well fed so they don't seem to be having any physical problems. They eat well but very little as they are so tiny, though each day they increase the amount. Yesterday we took them up to the post office and the lady at the window weighed one and it only weighed .8 of an ounce.
We have been trying all week to figure out what to name them (partly because we wanted to know they would survive). I think we have settled on Boeing for the male and Piper, Cessna, and Electra for the three females.
Edited: We sadly lost our little Piper. She got out when the cage door was accidently left unlatched and got out. There was a lot of activity going on and we think she may have been stepped on...so sad. The other three are doing great, but need a bigger cage. We needed to cover one with smaller wire because they can get out of the one we have that is bigger.
We also took in a little Red Squirrel 2 days after we lost Piper. His name is Mister Twister.
